Hello, everyone.
In this class, I'm going to introduce you a special form of Chinese art.
Calligraphy. Before we start, let me introduce myself first. My name is .
You can call me . I graduated from the graduate school of Art from
National Taiwan Normal University, and majored in Calligraphic history.
Later in the class, I'll let you guys know how to appreciate so-called
Calligraphy in the shortest time. Actually, Calligraphy is thought to be a
mysterious type of Art. But for most of the people, Art can always touch
their hearts, so I think Calligraphy won't be an exception. They think it
mysterious only because they cannot find the way to enjoy it. In order to
know this kind of Art, maybe we can try to understand it through something we
are more familiar with. Take dance for example. When we are watching people
dancing, why do we think dance to be a kind of Art and feel joyful then? I
think that's because the movements and the tempos of the dancers. Sometimes
fast, and sometimes slow. Our hands and feet will feel like moving with their
moves, and so do our minds. So, when we see the kind of actions, we usually
think he's expressing a strong and powerful feeling. On the other hand, this
action is usually related to elegance. Of course the meaning of the dance
will be broad, for example, this is fast, this is slow, this is a repetitive
tempo, and this is another kind of tempo. These are really easy to
understand. And Calligraphy as well, is almost the same. If we look closely
to every stroke, we can therefore imagine the man who wrote those strokes.
What's his pace, what are his movements, and even his tempo. And then, we
will be touched by those strokes and even see the face expression of the
calligrapher in our minds.
Therefore, I chose some types of calligraphy to let you see the
differences. I really hope you can know the way to appreciate the art of
Calligraphy after my explanation and your practice. And, I hope you can
understand what the calligraphers wanted to tell you guys through their
works.
What's more, I hope you to love the fun of Calligraphy. After I introduce
you some kinds of Calligraphy, I want you not only knowing them, but also
turning them into a kind of instinct. And later in our class, you can use
this instinct to create your own calligraphic works.
So now, let's begin!
Like all the ancient cultures, the earliest characters are just like
something in the nature world. So do our Chinese characters. Take two
characters for examples, and I believe you can know the meanings of them as
you see the pictures. Are you guys guessing? Yes, the first character is 馬,
which means a horse. It's very easy to write it. You just need to follow its
shape. The key point is you have to make it really look like a horse. And
while you're writing, you also have to mind the use of your brush. It's
because when writing this kind of ancient character, you should focus on its
shape . Don't try to use your creation too much just follow the example.
Also, we have to keep the lines to be the same thickness. Try to avoid making
the strokes sometimes thick and sometimes thin. I'll show you how to write
it, and then you can try it by yourselves.
The second character means the action of archery. I put the character and
the picture together to help you understand this character. Just like the
previous one, you can watch me writing first and try to write it on your own.
Next, I'm going to talk about another type of ancient character. It's a
kind of decorative one, and its key point is to add a tail on horizontal
strokes. Now I will show you how to write it, and then it will be your turn.
Actually the tail is only to decorate the character. This kind of image is
really similar to the currency of that ancient time. You can easily recognize
that by the picture.
Ok, now we can go to the next type of character. It represents the beauty
of strength. Just like what I have said previously, to appreciate the beauty
of Calligraphy, you have to imagine the action of writing to connect the
grace with the shape. So, when I write this strong character, you can watch
my actions and watch the shape of it as well. You can put yourselves into the
character and try to feel the strength. The strength of it is very obvious
and sharp. While writing, you must remember to show those angles and write
down those strokes powerfully. This is the calligraphic work to emphasize the
beauty of strength. Now, I'll show you for one time, and then you can try to
write it. .
The next one is another type of strong character. It's a kind of strength
that won't make others unpleasant. In our culture, sharp angles will
sometimes mean attack or aggression, so we will sometimes avoid them. I'm
going to show you a character without any angles that are too sharp. Instead,
there will be some arcs. Calligrapher sometimes expressed the feeling of
strength by the arcs. Now I'll show you how to write it. You can follow me.
After the strong characters, we can do some soft ones. In other words,
it's a kind of character representing elegance. Therefore, we will also write
it in an elegant way to give the character an elegant life. In our cultural
view point, most of the people like this kind of characters most. The master
piece in front of you guys was written by a great calligrapher. The reason
why he has been thought to be great is because of this piece of work. It
reveals a very graceful feeling and it's widely loved by people. So now, you
can watch me writing and do it by yourselves.
After your practice, you probably think it complicated. The secret of
this character is that it not only shows the elegance, but it is also an
important indicator of learning Calligraphy. Most Calligraphy teachers always
say that if you can write this character well, your skills in Calligraphy
must be really good. We pronounce this character as "永" in Chinese. There
are eight writing actions. It is said that these eight actions contain all
the calligraphic skills. Actually, I don't agree with this statement that
much, but I'm responsible to let you know it.
Now, it's time for you to do some creation. In graphic arts, there's one
key point. That is to make it look balanced, which means to make it look
comfortable to everyone. It is not that easy to reach this goal. You have to
keep practicing in order to make it. Now I'm going to create a work by
Chinese characters. While I am doing it, I will tell you what I'm thinking.
I'll tell you the way I try to make it look comfortable. After me, you can
try to create something by yourselves. Of course, you can do it with English
alphabets or any other writing language. So, let's begin!
First of all, you can use more ink to make this character stand out.
Since this character has stood out too much, we may make the next one smaller
or thinner, or dryer. Of course you can add some wet characters after the dry
one. And this is a fast one, so add some slow ones. See, the line on your
right is so thin, so I think it will be good to make this thicker. These are
the ways to make your work seem balanced. You can use your own way to balance
the picture and make it look comfortable. Then after that, it means you
create a piece of art only belonging to you. Let me demonstrate again in a
short time, and then you can practice.
Ok, after the happy time, I got something else about calligraphy to tell you.
In our culture, Calligraphy can be shown in another way. You can see from the
pictures I gave you. Why is there still a big space left? It's because for
me, a calligraphy work is not only a personal creation, also a kind of thing
for remembering the time. That means, I complete this work but I also want to
collect all the emotion, thoughts and people around me in it. Therefore,
sometimes my friends and I would write something about our thoughts and
experiences on the last space. Those words can be celebrating the finish of
this fine work, or sad for the unreturnable happy time.
Let's take a look of your own piece of art again. You will understand why I
gave you guys such a long paper. You can invite your friends to sign on it,
draw on it, or even write down some feelings to memorize the great hours we
spent together.
I borrowed something to help me explain the importance of replicating and
conserving. Several years ago, our government wanted to replicate some
masterpieces, so they chose 40 pieces from more than 60 thousand. The
government appointed some Japanese to do it. They demanded those Japanese
produce the replicas which cannot be distinguished from the real ones by
eyes. That is to say, every piece you see now has no significant differences
from the real one. The works you see now, including the cloth outside, the
scroll which looks like jade, and the cloth inside, are just the same as the
real ones in the National Palace Meseum. The only way to identify whether
it's a replica or not is to touch it. Now take a look of these replicas, and
try to fold it as I did.
Ok, let's see the second one. There are two special things about this one.
First, it is created by one of the most famous Chinese calligrapher, shi-chi
Wang. Second, there are some clues hiding in it to tell us it is certainly a
fake. Generally, all replicas will have this kind of clues in order not to
confuse people. Ok, now you may want to find out where the clues are. Try it!
Now let's see the answers. There are several key points indicating it's a
fake. First, it is obvious that the points in last three characters have the
same hand-writing mending marks which are not natural. This is because the
producer outlined the points first and then filled the color in, unlike the
general way we write it. Second, we can see that there is an irregular shape
rounded by thin string in the middle of this character. The reason is that
the producer tried to tell us that in the original piece, that part of the
irregular shape was a broken part. Similarly, in the lower part of first line
of the work, two characters seemed to be cut to half. And the producer also
use the thin string to outline the irregular shape. Here, the same reason
also makes sense. The black string is a kind of mark which tells us that this
part is broken in the real one. After the explanation, I believe that you
guys have basic skills to recognize a masterpiece of calligraphy is a real
one or not.
Alright, I think our class would stop here. Thanks for your participation
and efforts. It's a really great experience, and I want to apologize to you
that my English speaking is not fluent enough. You must have felt difficult
to understand me. Thank you again, and please do me a favor; clean up your
desk before you leave. Thank you!!
