The Main Entrance to the Taipei Imperial University, predecessor of National Taiwan University, looked toward the southwest and exited to what is Roosevelt Road today. Two rows of royal palms were planted in a square outside the Entrance in 1950 when the Fu Si-nian Memorial Garden was dedicated. After 1977, the square served as a virtual free speech corner by civil activists who would incite crowds against the humdrum of busy traffic. The University then built a wall and dug triangular patches of flowerbeds as measure of crowd control. At the end of 2003, with the passage of the resolution to beautify the space outside the Main Entrance, the University began to restore the old view of the square to bring the vista more in line with the main campus and worked closely with Taiwan Power Company to renovate the pedestrian sidewalks and the subway underneath the intersection of Xinsheng South and Roosevelt. Construction works started in November 2004 and finished the following February to create a well-designed human space: The University Promenade.
