If you are trying to travel across a lake in a sailboat, you are reliant on
the wind to take you there. No matter how good you are at manning the sales,
you won't get anywhere without sufficient breeze. If you are traveling by
canoe, though, you know that you will have to use oars and your own power to
get across the lake.
The sailboat could represent luck, while the canoe could represent hard work.
Just because you haven't "lucked into" something you want, does not mean it
isn't possible. In fact, once you start working hard, you will discover that
the wind pushes the currents in your favor.
