NEWPORT, R.I. - Celtics [team stats] practices end, and the questions move
toward Kevin Garnett and his right knee. People want to talk to Rasheed
Wallace, and they want to know how Marquis Daniels is fitting in, too.
Across the way, Paul Pierce [stats] sits and ices his knees in relative
anonymity. As training camp gets rolling, he’s not The Story.
PAUL PIERCE.
“Yeah, that’s true,” coach Doc Rivers said after yesterday’s session. “But
he’s still Paul Pierce. We certainly don’t lose sight of that.”
The Celtics will be much better this season if Garnett can stay healthy and
Wallace and Daniels can raise the level of the reserves. The team will be
stronger all around if Kendrick Perkins [stats] can pick his spots with a
newfound offensive proficiency, and Glen Davis improves on defense thanks to
quickness from a newly toned body.
But when the games get big, the C’s success still will be determined largely
by Pierce’s ability to put the ball in the hole. Teams win championships, and
the captain still carries a lot of figurative weight.
“Each guy is critical in his own way, but Paul’s our primary scorer,” Rivers
said. “I mean, when we need a bucket, Paul’s our guy. When we need an open
shot, Ray (Allen)’s our guy. But Paul is such a big part of everything we do.”
As his eyes peered out from his hoodie warmup jacket, Pierce laughed at his
fall from media attention.
“I’m still here,” he said. “I’m still in the building.
“But really, I’m just trying to help my new teammates fit in and make them as
comfortable as possible. That’s what it’s all about. Hey, I know what the
story is when you bring in new guys. People want to know how they’re going to
fit in. That’s what everyone’s going to talk about. But here inside the team
it’s different. I mean, having new guys is fun for us, too, but we know what’
s important. We know what we have to do. We’re here just trying to get
everything and everyone on the same page, and that’s been going really good.”
It’s not that Pierce shies away from the spotlight or doesn’t embrace the
need to produce in crunch time. But where some great players prefer to be more
singular stars, he prefers to blend in with others, only stepping out for a
solo when necessary.
“It’s great having stars around you because you feel less pressure,” Pierce
said. “You know that on any given night you’ve got guys that can carry you. I
pick times when I need to step up for this ballclub, but when you’ve got this
type of supporting cast and All-Stars around you, it makes it great. With the
kind of players I have around me, it’s a no-brainer to want to share the load.
Sharing will, in turn, make Pierce better in the long run. The captain was
visibly drained by the end of last season but has a new energy.
“Paul’s playing terrific,” Rivers said. “You can see he likes this team,
especially the second unit. He looks good now, and I think he’ll be able to
sustain that longer. Paul knows what our depth means to us and to him.
“He’s the kind of star that likes the team situation. I think most young guys
need to be (individualistic). I think the older you get, for the most part, the
more you appreciate more stars on your team and you realize you can’t do it by
yourself. I mean, there are some exceptions to that rule, but for the most
part, when you look historically in basketball, young guys want to be stars.
When they get older, some of that goes away.”
Players like Pierce don’t need to stand out as much. And it doesn’t bother
him in the least that the attention wanes . . . as long as his game remains.
