Doc Rivers has occasionally felt the need to rein in his team this season.
Doc
Be it Kevin Garnett last December in Sacramento, Paul Pierce in a
nose-to-nose trash-talking match with the Knicks’ Quentin Richardson, or
Kendrick Perkins on just about any occasion, the Celtics coach is forever on
alert for players who are about to cross the line.
And now that they are spanking the young Hawks in a first-round playoff
series that continues tomorrow night with Game 3 in Atlanta, the chippiness
has grown.
Rivers doesn’t want his players, walking as tall as ever with a 2-0 edge, to
back down. He also doesn’t want them to get thrown out.
Judging from some of the hard fouls on both sides during the Celtics’ Game 2
win Wednesday night, it’s not surprising that the coach’s alarm has sounded.
“I don’t mind the hard fouls by either team,” Rivers said. “I just don’t
like the trash talking and silly stuff where everyone gets in each other’s
face.”
Rivers undoubtedly was thinking back to Josh Smith’s late hit on Pierce
Wednesday, and Perkins’ rush to get up in the young Smith’s face.
Pierce strained his lower back on the play, and James Posey was later
whistled for a flagrant 1 foul on Smith.
Smith
“I thought we jumped in, and they jumped in,” said Rivers. “Honestly, I don
’t even know if there was a hard foul in the game - they weren’t that hard.
I thought the foul on Paul was hard. The only thing I told (referee) Eddie
Malloy was if you’re going to call a flagrant foul on Posey, then the one on
Paul has to be that way as well. Other than that, I thought the officiating
was really good, because they made sure that it didn’t go anywhere.”
“It’s nothing we can’t handle,” said Perkins. “Our team plays physical
at practice every day, so it’s nothing that we can’t hand. Yeah, they gave
a foul to one of our superstars, but he came back and competed.”
Extra care for Pierce
Pierce, the superstar in question, reported for treatment at the team’s
Waltham training facility yesterday, and declared himself to be in good
condition.
Pierce
He returned to action Wednesday night and finished with 14 points in the
victory.
He received treatment from Vladimir Shulman - the Celtics’ longtime massage
therapist - and went home to rest up for today’s practice and flight to
Atlanta.
Just getting started
The Celtics had little trouble holding their homecourt edge. They beat the
Hawks by an average margin of 21 points - up from their average winning
margin of 14.6 in three regular-season games against the Hawks.
But they’re not exactly impressed with themselves.
“They told me the playoffs don’t start until you win one on the road,”
said Rajon Rondo . “Hopefully we start it (tomorrow).”
