Tough first round? Ainge’s been there

ATLANTA - Danny Ainge isn’t worried in the least about the Celtics’ troubles
in the first round of the playoffs. And while you may not agree with his lack
of concern for what it may mean down the line, the man has some history on his
side.

“When I was in Phoenix, we had the best record in the league,” Ainge said of
1993 when he was a key member of the Suns’ backcourt. “We were the No. 1
seed and the Lakers were the eighth seed. They weren’t the Lakers of the
tradition.”

“They were a team that we should beat easily,” Ainge went on. “We had
handled them during the regular season. But we lost the first two games in
Phoenix, and the first round was just a five-game series back then. Then we
were behind in Game 3 at halftime. (Suns coach) Paul Westphal came in the
dressing room and started telling jokes. Then he asked the players if they
knew any jokes.

Ainge, the C’s director of basketball operations, remains confident about his
team, notwithstanding the hiccups against the Hawks.

“The biggest thing I worry about - and I think you saw a little of it with
Detroit - is sometimes you just don’t play like yourself,” Ainge said. “You
get a little tense. I think that we showed a little bit of that in Game 4
here.”

The best way to handle it, he believes, is to push aside the pressure and try
to work in a more relaxed manner.

“I think sometimes you’ve just got to play through it,” Ainge said. “You
know, that’s why the important thing is to just focus on the defense and
don’t think about offense. When you struggle from the free throw line, the

just got to get away from it and clear your mind.

seriously . . . because we didn’t play well and we won in Boston easily. Then
in Game 4, I thought we played hard but we didn’t play well. And their best
players really played well and stepped up. Then in Game 5 we put it together.
We played with effort and we made shots.”

“我不認為我們在前兩戰進攻打的很好。我認為我們防守的很好。我認為我們在第三戰
沒有嚴肅地看待對手…因為我們沒有打好，但是還是輕易地在波士頓贏球。然後在第四

So no matter how difficult it is to get past Atlanta, Ainge doesn’t think
there is anything to be drawn from the C’s troubles.

所以不管要贏過老鷹隊有多辛苦，Ainge不認為有任何事會造成Celtics的麻煩。

“No,” he said, “it’s like the NCAA tournament. Sometimes the third seed
can barely beat the 14th seed in the first round and then go all the way and
win the championship or get to the Final Four. I think first-round series can
be very difficult. I remember with the Celtics having trouble with the Bulls
in the first round a couple of times. We won the games, but they were battles.
Every game was tough.”

“不會。”他說”就好像NCAA巡迴賽。有時候第三種子好不容易才在第一輪幹掉第十四
種子，然後一路順利贏得冠軍，或是打到最後四強。我認為第一輪可以是非常辛苦的。
我記得我在 Celtics時，第一輪曾經好幾次被公牛隊製造一些麻煩。我們贏得比賽，但
是都是大戰。每場比賽都很艱困。”
