Stopping LeBron a Tall Order for Pierce and Co.

When Michael Jordan was at the height of his powers in the early 90s, the
Cleveland Cavaliers were always looking for new ways to defend him, because
they learned repeatedly that there really was no way to stop him.

The Celtics are about to find out if there's a way to stop his protege. But
one thing's certain. The Celtics don't expect one guy to do it.

In Jordan's time, the best bet was to find a long, physical guy who could belly
up to His Airness and attempt to keep him in check. The New York Knicks had
some success against Jordan with Gerald Wilkins, Dominque's younger brother who
was well known for his defensive abilities and eventually earned the label of
the "Jordan stopper".

James coming from the Celtics camp as their second round series with the
Cavaliers gets underway.

That isn't to say that the Celtics don't have a plan to try and stop him. So
what's the strategy against James?

"The object with him is to slow him down," said Celtics Captain Paul Pierce,
who'll likely be checking James more often than not. "A guy who has the
ultimate green light to shoot whenever he wants, [he's] tough to guard."

Pierce and James have similar builds and even some similarities in their games.
While the action-figure sculpted James is known for his great strength in
attacking the basket, Pierce's physique belies his ability to take contact and
still get to the hoop as well. And after several matchups over the last few
years, Pierce knows James' game as well as anyone.

The Celtics are certainly familiar with some of those other guys. The Cavs'

Wally Szczerbiak may dole out unsolicited high fives and step on the three

and he's likely to employ that strategy against Ray Allen.

Rivers knows both guys well and reminded the media at Monday's practice that
James' teammates are better than people think, and that James is ready to take
advantage of that.

"It's a team game and the guy who understands that more than anybody is LeBron,
" Rivers said. "If you're gonna try to double team him then he's going to try

At this point, after taking the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals last season, James
has basically seen all there is to see with regard to defensive tactics. It
will likely come down to execution of defensive principles and good old-fashioned
effort to put a lid on the NBA's top scorer.
