One man's great defense can be another's accident.

When Cavaliers star LeBron James missed his last drive in Tuesday
night's 76-72 Celtics victory over Cleveland in Game 1 of their Eastern
Conference semifinal series at the Garden, much was made of Kendrick Perkins
ability to influence the play while also avoiding the foul.

The Celtics center looked limber and controlled, imposing enough to
discourage one of the game's great shot-makers. But leave it to a coach to
see the moment differently.

"I think, more than anything, that Perk got caught in that position
and was just trying to get out of the way," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said
yesterday at the team's practice facility. "It was more him being in that
position and trying to disappear, thinking, 'Oh, please don't see me, please
don't call the foul on me.' "

"Well, maybe," Perkins said. "You know what? I probably would have
fouled him, honestly."

The center's growth, especially as a defensive player, is being
recognized. When TNT requested a C's player to go on camera with Cheryl
Miller yesterday, Perkins and point guard Rajon Rondo got the call.

matters that he can control, like the paint.

A season of playing next to Garnett has clearly sparked his game. The
same is true of first-year assistant coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive
rotations.

"I think I'm just understanding my role a whole lot better. It's that
more than anything," Perkins said. "I've picked up a lot of things from

night. You have to trust someone who works that hard. You know he's going to
put you in a position where you're going to succeed. He doesn't ask anything
of you that you can't do."

Growth may also be a matter of who is no longer on the scene.

"I really believe that a big part of this is having Garnett around,"
Rivers said. "Now Perk doesn't look at that position on the floor and think,
'I should be getting the same touches as him.' With Al (Jefferson) that's
kind of how it went. It was the whole thing of being best friends, and out of
that there was a natural kind of competition. With (Garnett) there's no
question of who is going to get what.

to be the main defender back under the basket, and he was worried about
someone having his back. He doesn't have that worry now. I'm just proud that
he's had great focus while doing it."

That's good to know the next time Perkins spots James drawing a bead
on the rim or about to burst off a pick. (?)
"Hey, it's the playoffs," Perkins said. "I didn't expect to be
dribbling the ball down the floor, either, but that's something I did
(Tuesday) night."
「嘿，這就是季後賽，」Perk說︰「我從沒想到我會在場上運球，但我做到了。」
