Letter From The Captain
Dear Celtics Fans –
What’s up Boston? I can’t tell you how excited I am to get the 2005-06
season started. But before things get crazy with the regular season schedule,
I wanted to take a moment and thank you all for your support over the past
few years. As I get ready to start my eighth season with the Celtics, I can
honestly say that Boston fans are the greatest. I can’t wait to go out there
and make you all proud of this team.
I took some time this past summer to unwind and just mentally and physically
prepare myself for this year, but I did spend some time working out with my
young teammates, trying to establish our chemistry early. Since training camp
has begun, I have been excited about the upcoming season and the talent we
have here. Our rooks are great – Gerald Green is young but has a lot of
potential. And Ryan Gomes and Orien Greene continue to work hard and really
fit in well with our system. Our second and third year guys - Marcus Banks,
Kendrick Perkins, Delonte West, Tony Allen, Al Jefferson and Justin Reed –
are back and ready to pick up where they left off last season. And trust me
when I tell you that Big Al is the real deal – the kid’s a beast. He could
be an All-Star someday – he just has that much potential.
Even though we finished the pre-season 3-5, I think we played well and pulled
together as a team. I am also excited to play with Ricky D again for a full
season – whether he starts or comes off the bench, he always provides a
spark for our team. Raef looks strong, and Mark had a great pre-season – he
looked like he really worked hard this summer to get ready.
I have been waiting for Opening Night against the Knicks since the schedule
came out. Game Seven against the Pacers stuck with me all summer, and I am
determined to go out and help this team do better. With Doc back running the
team and his coaching staff, combined with our new players – Brian
Scalabrine and Dan Dickau – I believe we are going to make some noise again
in the Atlantic Division. I know everyone thinks the Nets will run away with
this thing, but we are the defending Atlantic Division champs, after all. And
that is something I’m really proud we were able to do – win the first
Atlantic Division championship since Larry Bird and his teammates did so 12
seasons before.
As I get ready to play New York tomorrow night, I want to thank you all in
advance for your support of our team. Please continue to come out to the
Garden (by the way, thank you to TD Banknorth for bringing the name back) and
cheer us on – we appreciate all you do, and it definitely helps us win.
Believe me – homecourt advantage is a real thing in the NBA. And this year,
we want to see more “green” in the Garden – and all over Boston. So dig
out all of your Celtics apparel and green clothes - let’s paint this city
green and show everyone our Celtics Pride.
On behalf of my teammates, I promise that we will give your our best every
night. We hope to see you at the Garden soon, and thank you for your
continued support.
Take care,
Paul Pierce
