Paul Pierce’s big night speaks volumes

Paul Pierce never spoke so much as a word last night, yet somehow managed to
issue two powerful statements.

Paul Pierce昨晚沒說一個字，但是他還是發出了兩份很有力的宣言。

Statement No. 1: Before the Celtics met the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 of their
best-of-seven playoff series at the Garden, a press release was issued in which
Pierce addressed the suddenly infamous “menacing gesture” from Game 3.

宣言一：在第五戰前，一份有關第三戰Pierce那個突然很不名譽的”威嚇手勢”的聲明

A gang-related salute? A simple locker room gesture that’s been in play all
season?

“I 100 percent do not in any way promote gang violence or anything close to
it,” the Celtics captain said. “I am sorry if it was misinterpreted that way
at Saturday’s game.”

It was, in a way, a throwback to the bad old days of the 2006-07 season, when
Pierce was a one-man show for a bottom-of-the-barrel outfit.

Look! There’s Pierce, scoring at will! Look! There’s Pierce, playing hard on

There was no talk on this night about hand gestures being gang-related, no
talk about fines being levied by the NBA’s various deans of discipline.

Pierce, instead, was a one-man gang in the first quarter, scoring 10 of his
game-high 22 points in what would be a systematic, 110-85 dismantling of the
Hawks that sends this series back to Atlanta with the Celtics a victory away
from advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

And that’s why, in the end, the NBA’s decision to fine Pierce $25,000 for
aiming that hand gesture at the Hawks’ Al Horford in Game 3 may turn out to
be a rallying cry for the Celtics.

“The way he came out early,” offered Kendrick Perkins, “we just rode on his
back. He had great focus. We fed off of him tonight. You could see it in his

But by virtually all accounts, Pierce used the gesture - in which he maneuvers
his right index finger and thumb into a circle and raises his three other
fingers together - throughout the regular season.

Let’s apply some common sense here.

Either the gesture is gang-related or it is not gang-related. And if it is
gang-related, it’s inappropriate during an NBA game whether it’s being aimed
at your own teammates, the opposing team, the referees or a pregnant woman in
the fourth row.

這個手勢，跟幫派不是有關就是沒關。如果這跟幫派有關，在 NBA比賽裡就是不適當，
不管你是不是朝著你的隊友、你的敵隊、裁判，還是坐在第四排的孕婦。

If the league truly is up to speed on gang-related hand gestures, they would
have been wise to penalize Pierce the first time a piece of video popped up
showing ol’ No. 34 doing it.

如果聯盟真的想要跟上時代處理幫派相關手勢，當一開始的影片顯示34號這樣作的時候
，就該睿智地處罰他。

The NBA has boxed itself in on this one. Now every gesture, however innocent it
appears, is open to interpretation. Gestures to an opponent, to a teammate, to
a game official need to be looked at.

NBA 現在有點作繭自縛。現在每個手勢，不管看起來有多無辜，都得被公開檢驗。朝對
手比的手勢、朝隊友、朝比賽裁判比的手勢都要拿來檢驗。

And this practice should begin in November, not during the playoffs.

But the NBA has spoken, and now Pierce is not speaking.

That is, not speaking off the court.

也就是，不在場下發言。

On the court, he can be heard loud and clear.
