They are living the life they worked so hard to achieve. Nobody can blame them for that. Sometimes, however, you find a guy like Leon Powe who works really hard at giving back to the community he was raised in or going the extra mile for those less fortunate. I get the press releases from the Celtics PR team and I have to admit, usually I just gloss over the community service ones. They don't really interest me from a basketball standpoint and sometimes I dismiss them as transparent attempts by the team to raise their image in the community (which is fine by me, by the way). With that said, I find myself feeling sad that the media (and bloggers like me) often pay so much attention to DUI's and gun charges but pay little to no attention to athlete's giving back. So the more of these press releases I've gotten, the more I keep seeing the same name pop up. Bill Walker is everywhere. Now I know that he's in Boston for the 2nd straight summer working on his game, so he's just around for the team to call. But you have to admire the fact that he seems to always be ready and willing to help out. Back in June Bill Walker and Brian Scalabrine took a bus load of kids around DC. In addition... I don't know what kind of guy he is or if he's going to keep this up over his career. But you know what? This is a pretty nice start for him off the court. ----- Bill Walker had a life similar to Leon’s, at one point he was homeless and living in an abandoned house filed with roaches and rats. The number on his neck is the address of that house. ----- Character matters Rasheed may have his expletive control problems on court but by all reports he’s a good man off court. Even if Marbury’s affordable shoe line was an agent’s image polishing move, it still shows an energy toward the “right way” to be. Even if contrived, someone sat him down and explained why this would be a good thing to do. I’m glad you did this piece on Walker. Leon was a top man in this regard and I like to see the Celts doing some careful talent picking or social coaching with these guys. I think Perk would be super on the hospital ward , school gym trail if he would get some elocution lessons. You can see he has a heart to but is pretty inarticulate. by Wildblu1 on Aug 5, 2009 8:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs You're right, the team seems to be loading up on smart guys with character. Walker impressed me with how thoughtful an interview he gave as a 20yo kid last year: he was wise beyond his years. Sheed clearly is bright with character as well. Perk and Leon, for all we can see, are as standup as they come. Ray and KG are very thoughtful as well. (Starbury seems to have lost it, but his heart and actions were in the right place with his shoe line.) It’s nice to see so many of them doing so much—yes, I know some of it is in their contracts—and it makes it much nicer rooting for them as a team. And thanks, Jeff, for noticing it with Walker! ------- The Celtic’s have a solid reputation, for many years. of giving back…good to see Bill continues that tradition -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 114.137.219.174
