Another winning night for the 1955 champions

The Chelsea Centenary Dinner at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, to
honour the 1955 champions was a winning night for them.
An auction to raise money for the surviving members of the side
reached ￡3,000 per man as various items fetching serious money. A signed
1950s style ball fetched ￡8,000 from one Peter Kenyon. A mounted pair of
unmatching boots — a 1955s boot signed by captain Roy Bentley and a 2005
boot signed by captain John Terry — went for ￡6,000.
The players present were goalkeeper Chic Thomson, left-back Stan
Willemse, left-half Derek Saunders, right-winger Eric Parsons, inside-
rights John McNichol and Peter Brabrook, centre-forwards Roy Bentley and
Bobby Smith, inside-lefts Les Stubbs and Seamus O’Connell who flew in
from Spain, and left-wingers Frank Blunstone and Jim Lewis. So we had a
squad even then!
Special guests were Sir Tom Finney and Jimmy Hill, and Sir Tom re-
presented Roy Bentley with the Championship trophy — something that
didn’t happen until the Charlton Championship presentation match last
season when John Terry and Frank Lampard handed it over to him.
Lord Stratford, or Tony Banks as he is widely known, also in the
picture, remembered the members of the team who have died: goalkeeper
Bill Robertson, defenders Peter Sillett, John Harris and Stan Wicks, and
right-half Ken Armstrong. The surviving members are aged between 71 and 82.
Stan Willemse, asked on stage what football was like 50 years ago,
said: “If I had trouble with the wingers, I just kicked them up in the
air.”Plenty of Chelsea Pensioners were present as the function was held in
their home. It was a special night for special people in a special place.

November 24th.
