Digging deep at Cobham

The construction of Chelsea's brand new first team and academy training
headquarters building at Cobham is now approaching a third of the way
through its planned duration. The subterranean nature of the design has
become increasingly apparent.
Since the relocation of training to Surrey from Harlington in December
2004, the facilities have been housed in temporary buildings, albeit
temporary buildings of the highest specification. It is a marked step-up
from the old Harlington collection of sports pavilions and portacabins.
Unlike Harlington, Cobham is also Chelsea-owned.

Twenty-five weeks ago work began on a new permanent HQ on a site adjacent
to the temporary buildings.
Since then, 25,000 m3 of Surrey earth and other material have been
removed, creating a large hole. One floor of the new training facilities
will be entirely below ground level. This will house amongst other
features the hydrotherapy pools essential for state-of-the-art injury
treatment and prevention.

Excavation on the site has now finished. Concrete is being poured in at
the rate of up to 45 truck loads-a-day. In total 3,500 m3 of concrete
will be used.
The next stage in the 70 week project is the arrival of structural steel.
Key to the design of the finished building has been a desire for it to
blend in with its out-of-town surroundings.

建築主體長這樣子
The steel frame structure will support 'smart' glass that will react to
light. Brasswork fins will form much of the walls. They will naturally
weather and age so the building will look suited to the environment, much
like an old church or hall.

On the roof will grow Sedum — a browny-green succulent plant, again to
help the HQ to fit in. It's a ground breaking structure in more ways than
one.

Proximity to the River Mole makes it vital the presence of the building
does not disrupt normal water drainage off the land. An intricate set of
perforated trenches and pipes that will take water around the building
and towards the river is currently being put in place.

As the hole in Cobham steadily gives way to the new construction, the day
is approaching when Chelsea's players will benefit from training
facilities built for champions.
