COBHAM THROUGH AN ARCHITECT'S EYE

Standing quietly by as small impressed group after small impressed group
toured the brand new building at Cobham yesterday, three people had every
right to feel satisfied.

They were the ones at the official unveiling who weren't desperate to get
inside and see just what the best training facilities money can buy look
like. They already knew everything there is to know about the building.

Phil Osborne, John Hampton and Damien Le Conte were the three architects
behind a distinctive construction that already had plenty of admirers.
Their company, AFL, has plenty of experience in the field, having worked
on Liverpool's Melwood training centre, Man United's Carrington and also
recent improvement works at Stamford Bridge.

This project however was different.

'It is unique in that it is a significantly higher investment per square
foot than others we have built and because of its green belt location,'
Osborne explained as he stood in view of the brass and glass side wall.
'We have had to think quite flexibly about the nature of the building and
it works very hard at being specific to its site. That makes it unique and
it was also part of our briefing to make something special and unique for
the club. The club allowed the designers to exercise their best thoughts.'

What now stood before them very much conformed to those thoughts. 'It is
remarkably close to the original concept sketches so all credit to the
team that has been involved in developing it because they got there. And
it has to be said they got there fairly efficiently. At the moment what is
inside is leading the market but that will change. The good thing is this
building is flexible enough to change as well.'

On first sight, the eye is immediately drawn to two features - the brass
plates that clad the sides of the building and the living vegetation on
the roof. The brass was an idea of Osborne's, inspired by a trip in Italy
as he travelled from Verona towards the Austrian border. He saw a church
with brass panels and slots of glass between and decided it was a good way
to give a new building an aged look rather than a conspicuous, shiny new
one.

'We wanted to connect the people inside the building with the people
outside, that is why there are direct views,' explained Osborne's
colleague Hampton about the large areas of glass between the brass.
'Players inside can see players out on the pitches, including from the gym
and pool.'

The roof is, not as it looks from a distance, grass but a succulent plant
called sedum. 'It does grow denser but stays very low, unlike grass,'
explained Osborne. 'It is a much more significant investment in green
credentials than turf as well.' The growth of this plant and the natural
ageing of the brass means the building will look at its best in a year's
time the architects believe.

Former Chelsea winger and regular expert on Chelsea TV, Clive Walker, who
was one those touring the building on opening day was already impressed
however.

'If I was still a player I would never be out of here,' he decided. 'You
can't fail to be impressed and it is like the very best of health clubs.
You hear rumours of what is in there and you can't wait to see it - but I
think it is the pool with the mechanism where the level of the floor goes
up and down that most caught my eye.'

Walker was a veteran of three different Chelsea training grounds - at
Mitcham, Molesey and finally Harlington. 'I liked training so it was never
a problem for me to be there but it was very much the case that once you'd
finished training you'd be out of there. That would not be the case now.'
