Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has revealed the chief reason
behind his decision to leave Manchester United for Stamford Bridge.
The Blues official is honest enough to admit that speculation surrounding
Claudio Ranieri's future at the club is never going to go away, but he hopes
a trophy-winning season will take some of the pressure off the affable
Italian.
"I wasn't looking to move," he told The Evening Standard. "But this job
represents the single most exciting challenge in European football over the
next five years.
"Roman Abramovich is passionate about it and we have to move away from
this perception that Chelsea is his hobby or his plaything. This is a
serious commitment by a very serious businessman.
"He wants Chelsea to achieve European status, to be number one, and,
while we are prepared to invest, we also want, over a period of time, to get
a return for that investment.
"Claudio has a contract until 2007 and we are still involved in all the
major competitions. I really want to close down all the speculation although
I am realistic enough to know that is most unlikely."
Meanwhile, Blues target Lucio has admitted he is prepared to consider a
lucrative London move in the summer.
"The offer from Chelsea is the most concrete," he told Express. "London
would not be a problem for me.
"After all, it's not much colder than in Germany."
The Brazilian had earlier admitted his preference was to join Serie A
giants Juventus, who have also been hot on the trail of the Bayer Leverkusen
centre back.
