CHINESE WEB DEAL SIGNED
Tue, 28th Nov 2006
Chelsea Football Club will today announce a partnership to create a
Chinese language website.
The exclusive deal with SINA, China's number one internet portal, will see
a Mandarin language Chelsea FC website launched in mainland China next
year.
SINA.com's sports site has an average daily traffic of more than 40
million, three times that of its nearest competitor, giving it a market
share of more than 50%.
Chelsea will be the only Premiership team to partner with SINA and will
have a guaranteed prominent position on the SINA.com sport home page that
will link to the new Chelsea site.
The site will be based on the redesign of www.chelseafc.com launched last
week.
Chelsea's popularity in China has grown hugely since winning the
Premiership for the first time. According to Premiership sponsors
Barclays, Chelsea scores a 16% popularity rating in China with a league
average of 5% per club.
Chelsea ranks fourth of all foreign clubs in terms of popularity with
9.3%, just 0.4% behind Manchester United and ahead of Barcelona and Real
Madrid (source: Prescient, Chinese marketing agency).
Business affairs director Paul Smith, who negotiated and concluded the
deal, will announce the partnership at the Soccerex conference in Dubai.
He says: "Chelsea is delighted to be in partnership with SINA. They are
without doubt the market leader in China and together we will offer
Chinese fans of Chelsea and the Premier League a unique web proposition in
their own language and adapted to the culture of that market.
'This partnership marks the next stage of Chelsea's development in China.
Clearly we are becoming more popular and this is the right time to take
that to the next level.'
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon adds: 'China is a key market for us
but our philosophy is to help Chinese football, as well as our own
business, and our partnership with SINA will reflect that.'
SINA Chief Executive Officer Charles Chao said: 'I believe the
co-operation that has been established between Sina and Chelsea will have
a tremendous influence on football in China.
'I think the real winners of this co-operation are the fans themselves who
will now have far easier access to the world of football. I also sincerely
hope this website is just the beginning of what will be a long and
fruitful relationship.
'Since Sina launched in 1998 it has been the number one choice for Chinese
readers around the world to keep up to date on sports.
'It is also the market leader in terms of traffic, advertising revenue and
market share. According to statistics taken by AC Nelson during the World
Cup, the number of users accessing the Sina sport World Cup website peaked
at 57.6 million, which broke the record in China for an online sports news
site.
The traffic number is more than four times that of other players in the
market.
Chelsea already has partnerships in China and in April 2006 entered into
co-operation agreements with the Chinese Football Association and the
Asian Football Confederation to develop grass roots football.
In May 2007 Chelsea will be a partner in the International Football Arena
Beijing when the leading debating forum on football issues in Europe takes
its format to China for the first time.
The China office of William Morris Agency who work with Chelsea, helped
negotiate the deal.
