BLUES TO FIGHT BATES ACTION
Wednesday 10th March 2004
Chelsea insist that they will 'vigorously defend' themselves after
confirming that former chairman Ken Bates has started legal proceedings
against the club.
Bates resigned from his position as chairman last week after 22 years
at the Stamford Bridge helm, but has now served a £2 million writ for
breach of contract.
The 72-year-old claims he signed a deal during Roman Abramovich's
takeover last summer that entitled him to generous expenses and allowances
for work on club business, as well as the honour of representing Chelsea
at Football Association and Premier League meetings, for the next two years.
However, Bates found himself increasingly marginalised by the club, and
the arrival of Peter Kenyon as chief executive massively diminished his
powers at the club.
The outspoken former supremo decided to leave his post soon after the
West Londoners opted to axe his legendary programme notes, but is now ready
to take the club to court over the manner of his departure.
Chelsea deny any wrongdoing, however, and claim that Bates made his
decision under no pressure from the club.
A statement on the club's official website declared: "We can confirm
that Ken Bates has instituted legal proceedings against Chelsea Village plc
and Chelsea Football Club for breach of contract.
"We will be vigorously defending this action as we are satisfied that
we have behaved both responsibly and honourably in every way in our dealings
with Ken Bates.
"Ken Bates has resigned his position as chairman of Chelsea Football
Club and is no longer a director."
