Chelsea receive newspaper apology

Chelsea have received an apology from the Daily Mail following an article last
month.

The article, in the newspaper's Sports Agenda column, claimed that Emirates'
deal as Chelsea's shirt sponsor may have been brought to an end for religious
reasons because Roman Abramovich did not want an Arab airline on the club shirt.
The article also said that nobody from Chelsea was prepared to meet with
Emirates to discuss a renewal.

But in Tuesday's paper, the column carried an apology, under the headline
"Chelsea Football Club", which said: "Last month I mentioned the end of the
Emirates Airlines' shirt sponsorship deal with Chelsea.

"The club have assured me that after their sale to Roman Abramovich they met
Emirates to discuss a renewal and that Mr Abramovich had no involvement in the
decision to end the sponsorship deal. I am happy to accept that Mr Abramovich
does not make business decisions based on religious grounds and apologise for
any suggestion to the contrary."
