PAT NEVIN: BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO
帕特內文：疾在膏肓，無藥可醫
Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin has seen a few managers leave in the past and
has even removed one himself. He discusses the week just gone.
前切爾西球星派特內文曾見證過幾度主教練的人來人走，甚至自己也卸過一位的職務。今

This is not a column I wanted to write, well certainly not for a long time
anyway. First of all I am as disappointed as any Chelsea fan about the
departure of Jose and certainly would not want to pretend that I think it is
the perfect situation for the club.

It has been said many times already, but with due respect to other fine
managers in our history, I believe he is the best we have ever had. Like the
rest of you I would like to wish him every success in the future and thank him
for his work with Chelsea.

I could go on, but plenty has been said and written about him in the last week
and I think he should know how we feel by now.

The club itself, to its credit, haven't tried to dress the situation up in any
way, accepting when the announcement was made that there was a break down in
the relationship with Jose and Roman that could not be resolved.

This is where I have to be brutally honest with you. A few years back I found
myself in a similar situation to the one Peter Kenyon and Bruce Buck have
found themselves in. While I was chief executive of a club in the top league
in Scotland there was a huge breakdown between the chairman and the manager,
and I was caught in the middle.

For a year I battled to get these two good men, both of whom I counted as my
friends, to get on with each other but to no avail. I knew the manager was
talented, well I had chosen him myself as a rookie and he (Billy Davies) has
gone on to manage in the Premier League in England.

The chairman for his part was a good businessman, but at his own admission,
one with a very limited knowledge of the game. He certainly wanted what was
best for the club however; after all he had sunk a few of his millions into it
and was the major benefactor.

Try as I may I could not bridge the gap between the two and after 12 months of
stress it became clear that the poisonous relationship was damaging the club.
One had to go and when I got right down to it, the choice was a no brainer, I
had to get rid of the manager.
已盡我所能仍無法愈合這分歧，在經歷了12個月的緊張之後事態終於明朗：這種不良關係
根本就是劇毒，一點點消蝕這這家俱樂部。有一個必須離開，當我明白這一點後，選擇不

In the end, angry and disappointed though I am at losing the best boss in the
business, in the club's position, I wonder if I would have done anything
different? After all I had tried and failed for a year and finally realised
some relationships just cannot work. It is a reality and one not uncommon with
powerful individuals in any field.

Avram Grant has now come into the job and could hardly be more different than
his predecessor. Popularity is not going to be easy in the dressing room as
Jose was exceptionally popular with the majority of the players, but I suppose
managers will tell you that it isn't a popularity contest, it is about points
gained and cups won. If Avram does produce results he will be accepted, no
differently than any other football boss, if not then there are some
extraordinary men who would be willing to take on the job.
現在格蘭特已然執教，而且基本上不大可能會比其前任更有精彩。比起何塞難得的在更衣
室受到大多數球員的歡迎，他的道路更不會簡單。但我想主教練們會嚴肅正告你，這個職

On Sunday at Old Trafford his tactics were perfectly sensible and the changes
reasonable, along with the performance, particularly when compared to the
referees performance! The performance of the Chelsea fans at the game was
however outstanding. The noise was deafening throughout, even in defeat.
在周日的老特拉福德，他的策略明智，變化合理，還有表現不錯，尤其跟裁判的表現相較
！然而切爾西球迷的表現更加傑出。他們震天的?喊從始至終，即使失利。
It underlined to me what Chelsea Football Club really is, why I loved it so
much while I played there and why they are still my team. Through good times
and bad, happy and sad, the true fans have always been there and have out sung
everyone from North London to Manchester not to mention all over Europe on
their travels.
它忽然讓我明白了切爾西足球俱樂部到底意味著什麼，為什麼我踢球時對它異常傾情，我
退役後依然如此傾心。透過那些時光，勝利、失敗、歡笑、悲傷，真正的球迷永遠不倒，
他們用歌聲震撼從北倫敦到曼徹斯特一路每個人的心靈，更不必說他們的歐洲之旅。
They always stayed with us even at the bleakest moments and just when we
needed them most on Sunday, they produced a noise to be proud of. Over the next
weeks and months they will be sorely needed starting with Hull City tomorrow.
Let's hope they can lift the lad's spirits after such a painful start to the
season.
他們永遠與我們同在，即使最凋敝的時刻；周日我們最需要他們時，他們送上傲人的?喊
