SIDWELL: I'LL FIGHT FOR MY PLACE

New signing Steve Sidwell has spoken for the first time about what it's
like to be a Chelsea player, and announced: 'I'm not here to make up the
numbers.'

Twenty-four-year-old Sidwell arrives on a free transfer from Reading,
having previously been an Arsenal trainee, and was officially unveiled
after the team's first pre-season training session in Los Angeles this
week. The tough-tackling midfielder has made it clear he isn't just here
for the ride, and will be doing everything within his powers to break into
the line-up.

'I spoke to a number of clubs, and knew coming to Chelsea was going to be
a big challenge,' he reasoned. 'But I guarantee when people put challenges
in front of me I'm not one to lie down. Obviously it's disappointing when
people say: "It's a fantastic move, well done, but are you going to play?".

'All I can say is that I'm going to get a chance. There are players who
have come, such as Scott Parker, and it's not worked out. But I can't go
through my career not going to Chelsea, finishing my career and saying "I
could have played for them". I'd rather come here and give it a go, and if
it doesn't work out I'll hold my hands up and say I wasn't good enough,
but at least I've got the bottle to do it.
“我只能說我要爭取機會。我知道有些人來過，像帕克，結果並不好，但如果我不去

'There's been a lot of negativity, that I'm not going to play, but it's
down to me to get into the squad,' he explained. 'If I don't get into the
squad, I'll try even harder in training. I've got a strong mentality to do
well.'

Steve is already beginning to feel at home with his new team mates, with
whom some. He already knew a number of them, especially former Arsenal
colleague Ashley Cole.

'I know Ash, and JT has been a big help as the skipper, so I've been
bedding in nicely. It's nice to come into a big club knowing players and

After seeing out his contract at the Madejski Stadium, Sidwell was free to
discuss terms with other clubs, and after meeting Jose Mourinho, decided
Stamford Bridge was the place to be.

'I've watched a lot of him since he's been in the English game, and
respected him,' he said. 'I like the way he goes about things, the way he
talks to the media and sticks up for his players and club all the time. I
sat down with the boss to hear what he had to say and there was only one
decision I had to make, and that was to sign.'
