The popular consensus seems to be that it wasn't a classic, but we got there
in the end.

After a slow start to the game, we finally came alive in the last half hour,
with Didier Drogba scoring twice to seal victory over a determined Brondby
team in Copenhagen on Tuesday night. Assistant manager Steve Clarke was
pleased at the work out the team received before the clash with Manchester
United at Wembley on Sunday. 'It was a good game for us, they were well
organised, a bright team with good pace, and created one or two chances in
the match, especially the first half,' he said, adding: 'They caused us some
problems and made us work hard so from our point of view it was a good
exercise.'

It was also positive to finish the pre-season build up with a flourish, after
a draw and a defeat in the last two games had cast a cloud over a positive
preparation period. 'It's nice to end with a win, decent performance second
half, we weren't very happy first half. We played too deep, didn't pass the
ball very well and made a lot of mistakes,' said Clarke, who explained that
John Obi Mikel was withdrawn as a tactical measure, rather than through
injury. This means there are no new injury worries ahead of Sunday, and
Clarke believes good news is just around the corner for the casualty list.
'We train next on Thursday morning, and we expect Makelele, Essien, John
Terry, hopefully Arjen Robben, Andriy Shevchenko and Lassana Diarra to be
training. A lot of the players who missed tonight will be back in training,'
Clarke said.

Ashley Cole also came through around 65 minutes unscathed, and the assistant
manager was delighted with how he had performed in his first start of the
campaign. 'Over the 65 minutes he was the best player we had at that stage,
and definitely the best player in the first half. He looked sharp, he's been
out of the game three months so very, very pleasing.'

Another player who will be pleased with his input is Joe Cole, who came off
the bench at half-time, and constantly threatened the hosts with his direct
running, creating Drogba's second goal after a mazy run. 'I felt sharp, for
the last 15 minutes I felt a lot better, like I was back to myself. That's
good timing considering the season starts next week,' the winger said.

Cole feels that although the start was slow, there are plenty of positives to
be taken, and the margin of victory could easily have been greater. 'It was a
bit sluggish but we got going in the end. Had the game gone on for another 20
minutes we might have scored a few more goals. It took a while to get going,'
he said.
