LAMPARD AND PIETERSEN BOWLED OVER BY NEW MAGAZINE

They're joined in the pages by Wayne Bridge, enjoying the renewed energy
brought to the club by Felipe Scolari, and Chelsea legend Mickey Thomas,
the 1980s 'King of the King's Road', who speaks of his admiration for the
fans and a certain fan's admiration of him?
In addition there's an exclusive look at the development of the state-of-
the-art Academy facility and a chance to relive the 50 greatest Blues
moments as the club celebrates the 50th edition of Chelsea.
Blues fan and England cricket legend Alec Stewart tells the magazine that
Frank and KP are not so dissimilar: 'You want match winners, people that
can change a game - and that's in any sport. Both Frank and Kevin fall
into that category; they're very special players in their respective
sports.'
KP talks of his new role as captain of his country and the money now
pouring into the game, years after the same phenomenon hit the English
football scene.
Talking of the upcoming Stanford 20/20 matches in the Caribbean, the
cricketer admits: 'It's going to be incredible. I think it's probably
bigger than any football game in terms of the prize money - $20 million
for three hours' work, with each player on the winning team getting $1
million.'
As Frank had by then left the interview to put pen to paper on his new
five-year deal, Pietersen hailed Lampard's signature as 'Absolutely
massive. He scores 20-odd goals every season, so I think him signing a new
five-year deal is going to be huge for the club.'

Finally, in Chelsea's cult heroes feature, diminutive firebrand Mickey
Thomas pulls no punches as he recounts his brief but electrifying stint
at the Bridge.
Instantly beloved by fans after scoring a brace on debut, Thomas was
crowned 'King of the King's Road' but it was often his off the ball antics
that truly earned him the loyalty of the Chelsea faithful.
Having witnessed Nigel Spackman endure some unwanted attention one game,
Thomas took matters into his own hands.
'A chap named Andy Blair had been giving him some grief and I told him to
give it up, that they were winning 3-0. He didn't like it and said
something a bit personal to me. We had a corner up their end in front of
the Chelsea fans and I could see the referee wasn't looking so I punched
Blair, knocking him out.'
Although quick to insist this is no example to youngsters, Thomas remains
a legend at the club. So much so that even captain of club and country,
John Terry, would only sign a shirt for Mickey if Thomas himself returned
the favour. Ever humble, it left the Welshman in a state of disbelief.
'I had to give him one of my Chelsea shirts signed. I couldn't believe
it, the Chelsea and England captain asking me to sign something for him.'
In this month's edition there is more on the pre-season tour with a diary
from Malaysia and Moscow. The glistening new Academy and Community
building at Cobham allows the Chelsea camera through its doors and one of
its residents, Dutch Under 17 international defender Jeffrey Bruma is the
young player featured.
And with this the 50th edition of Chelsea, there is a commemorative review
of 50 front covers and 50 golden moments.
All this and more make the October edition of the Chelsea magazine
virtually unmissable and, at only ￡3.25, a must-have for all fans of the
Blues. It's available at the Megastore and all good newsagents (and highly
recommended by Mickey Thomas).
