Chelsea look to reinforce defence with Kaladze deal (選錄)
By Gabriele Marcotti
Kenyon and Adriano Galliani, the Milan vice-president, reached an agreement
whereby Crespo will remain at the San Siro for another year, with a slight
reduction in wages. Kakha Kaladze, Milan’s versatile Georgia left back, was
also the subject of discussions.
“I’ve been speaking to Galliani about Kaladze and Crespo,” Kenyon told
Italian reporters. “Things look promising, but I’ll be back next week.”
Kenyon is expected to discuss the Crespo deal with Chelsea's board tomorrow,
with the contracts being finalised early next week. The Kaladze situation is
more complicated, however.
Milan’s asking price is in excess of £6 million, a fee Chelsea deem too
steep for a player who started 18 Serie A matches last season. According to
Milan sources, Chelsea originally tried to secure Kaladze in part exchange
for Crespo, but Milan were keen to keep the deals separate and only ever
wanted the Argentinian on loan. Milan feel they are operating from a position
of strength with regard to Crespo because the player has no intention of
returning to London. Equally, they are not interested in a permanent move
as Crespo will be 30 next month and has three years left on a contract worth
nearly £5 million a year.
After meeting Galliani and other Milan officials in the morning, Kenyon
arrived at the offices of Inter to discuss the future of Veron. Like Crespo,
he was on loan from Chelsea last season and he, too, would like to remain in
Milan. Negotiations over Veron were not quite as clear-cut. “I’m fairly
confident that we can reach a deal to keep Veron at Inter, but I can’t tell
you right now if it’s going to be a loan or a permanent move,” Massimo
Moratti, the Inter owner, said. “We need to meet again, most likely after
the final of the Coppa Italia (next week).”
Inter are prepared to take Veron on a permanent move, but they are unwilling
to pay anything other than a nominal transfer fee and they insist that the
midfield player must agree to a cut in wages, which are close to £4 million
a year. It is thought that Chelsea would prefer a permanent move for Veron,
but, as with Crespo, they do not have much room for negotiation. Veron’s
hefty wages and his insistence on staying at Inter make it difficult for
Chelsea to attract interest.
