I have been told that Chelsea's hierarchy have tried to extend an olive branch
to Jose Mourinho in a bid to repair the relationship between manager and
board, but that Mourinho has not been interested. You can't blame him. The board
are the only people who do not seem to think that Mourinho is the Special One.

有人告訴我切爾西的管理階層曾經嘗試過向何塞．莫里尼奧提出談和的協議，試圖修補教
練和董事會之間的關係，只不過是莫里尼奧沒有興趣這樣做。你不能責備他，其實看來只

Where are the messages of support and praise? Why has Roman Abramovich, the
owner, not backed his manager in public? Why does Mourinho not have the same
degree of job security as Sir Alex Ferguson, Rafael BenItez and Arsane Wenger?
It is the least he deserves.

To get rid of Mourinho would be one of the most ridiculous dismissals ever,
even if Chelsea win nothing else this season. He has achieved more than in the
past two seasons because of the problems he has overcome: injuries, internal
tensions and not being allowed to improve the squad in January. If Abramovich
thinks that another manager could have done any better, he is wrong.

就算切爾西今季不能再贏得任何錦標，除去莫里尼奧將會是迄今其中一個最荒唐的解雇。
他比起過去兩個賽季其實取得了更多的成就，因為他克服了重重困難：傷患、內部緊張關
係和在一月時不獲批准增添球員。假如阿布拉莫維奇認為有另一個教練可以做得更好的話

Chelsea have lost only three times in the Premiership and are on target to
finish with about the same number of points as last season. It would be no
disgrace to come second to an exceptional Manchester United team. Chelsea have
won the Carling Cup, so that is at least one piece of silverware. As for
suggestions that Mourinho's job depends on winning the Champions League, that
is crazy. It is a cup competition. The line is fine. It is irrational to stake
a manager's future on whether his team win it or not.

切爾西今季在英超只曾三度落敗，同時亦正準備以和去季差不多的分數完成球季。僅次於
一支異常出色的曼聯而位居第二並不會是一件丟臉的事。切爾西已經贏得了聯賽杯，所以
亦最少有一項獎盃在手。有關莫里尼奧的帥位取決於冠軍聯賽冠軍的聯想就完全是糊塗的
。這是一項杯賽淘汰賽，任何球隊都有可能被擊敗。把一個教練的將來押在球隊能否取得
勝利之上是不合情理的。


There are far better yardsticks by which to assess Mourinho. I have not met a
Chelsea player who does not speak highly of him. Such unanimous respect is
unusual in football. The players know that he makes them better - Didier
Drogba, Michael Essien, Joe Cole, for starters. Michael Ballack and Andriy
Shevchenko are also much improved from when they arrived at Stamford Bridge.

還有一些更好的標準去評估莫里尼奧的價值。所有的切爾西球員對他都是高度讚揚的。如
此一致的尊敬在足球界是很罕見的。球員們都知道是他令他們變得更出色 -- 首先就有迪

It was Mourinho's decision to go with a small squad this season, which was a
risk, but young players such as John Obi Mikel and Lassana Diarra have grown
as a result.

以成展，好像約翰．奧比．米克爾和拉薩納．迪亞拉。


Probably eight out of ten of his transfer buys have proved a success - an
outstanding ratio. No manager is perfect, after all, but Mourinho makes fewer
mistakes than most. It is hard to think of a match where he got his tactics
wrong. He spots the need to make changes more quickly than anyone I've seen.
His substitutions are so bold yet almost always effective.

他所收購的球員之中大概十居其八都證明了是成功的 -- 一個很突出的比例。畢竟沒有一
個教練是完美的，但莫里尼奧所犯的錯誤比大部份教練都要少。很難可以想起在哪一場比
賽中他運用的戰術是不對的。他能夠及時察覺需要作出變動的能力比我所見過的任何一個
教練都要快。他所安排的替換是如此的大膽然而卻差不多總是有效的。


It is not as if the fans are turning on Mourinho - they adore him as well. And
the accusation that Chelsea do not play attractive football has been
exaggerated. It is not as though Chelsea are the reincarnation of Wimbledon.
They have been prettier this season, especially away from home. Seeing
superstars on fat contracts run and tackle as if their careers depend on it -
that is beautiful. Motivation, athleticism, character . . . these are as
wonderful to watch as a ten-pass move.

這亦似乎不是球迷正在反對莫里尼奧 -- 他們同樣地敬愛他。還有那個指切爾西踢不出引
人入勝的足球的罪狀也是言過其實的。雖然切爾西並不像溫布頓的再生，但他們今季的演

As for the suggestion that he and Abramovich do not see eye to eye, does that
matter? It is desirable that a manager and owner or chairman get on, but it is
not essential as long as both are working in the best interests of the club.

至於有人暗示他和阿布拉莫維奇意見不合，那又有什麼關係？教練和主席能夠相處融洽當
然很理想，但只要雙方都是為了俱樂部的最佳利益而努力，這就不是必要的了。


If he goes, Mourinho would walk straight into another job.

如果莫里尼奧離開，他將會輕易地取得另一份工作。


Every big club would chase him. The FA should offer him double what they paid
Sven-Goran Eriksson to be England head coach. But Chelsea? There would be a
big hole, impossible to fill. Some players loyal to Mourinho may leave in
disgust and those who stayed would surely not play at the same level.

每一間大型的俱樂部都會追求他。英格蘭足聯應該以支付給斯文-戈蘭．埃裏克森的雙倍
薪金去聘請他成為英格蘭的主教練。但切爾西呢？這將會變成一個巨大的破洞，一個無法
填補的破洞。一些忠於莫里尼奧的球員說不定會厭惡地離開，而留下來的亦肯定不能踢出
同樣的水準。


Abramovich would have to give his new manager a huge sum of money to bring in
his own men, but Chelsea would do no better. They would spend more and achieve
less, like an English Real Madrid. What's that saying? You don't know what
you've got til it's gone . . .

阿布拉莫維奇需要給他的新教練一筆龐大的金錢去引入他所需要的球員，但切爾西卻不會
變得更好。他們只會付出更多去獲得更少，就像一隊英格蘭的皇家馬德里一樣。那句話是
怎麼說的？直到失去才懂得珍惜…
