Chelsea's youth team, in transition as the season comes to an end, failed
to turn a goodish performance into a result last Saturday morning. But
Academy manager Neil Bath was not downhearted.

'The first-half was a pretty even 45 minutes,' he said. 'They went 1-0 up,
but we started and finished the half well. They played 3-5-2 with two
holding and one free in their midfield three, and that was a different
formation for our youngsters to face. People don't play that so much now.

'So they had to cope with that. I was happy for us to stick with our
shape, and we were able to cause them problems in wide areas. In the
second-half we were much the better team and could have scored four.
'Michael Woods could have had a hat-trick. I was very encouraged to see
him get so many chances, getting into the box. It was the same with Sergio
Tejera. We were looking to get him forward more, get more contact with and
a better relationship with the centre-forward. We were pleased with that.'

Once again schoolboys were tried as next season was being looked to.

Neil said: 'Jack Saville has just turned 16, and he was exceptional at
centre-back. He looked very confident.

'We also played a few boys who won't be here next season to give them an
opportunity of being seen by other clubs: Tomi Saarelma, Tom Bird, Nick
Hamann, Sam Hurrell.'

He summed up his response to the game as: 'Happy with the attitude and
performance. Need to improve the finishing.'
