Jose happy to spend small

Jose Mourinho has no problem with Chelsea's decision to tighten the purse
strings in the transfer market, confident that he can deliver silverware
without spending a penny.
The days of Chelsea's dominance over the rest of the Premiership in terms of
financial backing appear to be over, with the club's long term strategy being
not to pay-out huge transfer fees on star names.
While Mourinho has grown accustomed to having an open cheque book at Stamford
Bridge, last season he was told his spending will be culled and he is
expected to bring in only free transfers this summer.
The recruitment campaign has already begun in earnest as Steve Sidwell,
Claudio Pizarro and Alex have all arrived as free transfers and their new
taskmaster believes he already has the squad in place to reclaim the title
they lost to Manchester United in the campaign just past.
"The philosophy is we spent money before, built the squad for a long time and
don't need to make big investments season after season," he told the Times.
"Last season to this season, we will have basically the same squad. If you
forget 'old [Claude] Makelele', the squad is still young, still has a lot to
give. The squad can be together for a few more years so we don't have big
needs. If you don't have big needs, why spend big money?

"If you tell me we have exactly the same squad as last season without
injuries, I accept immediately. I don't need one single more player or one
single more pound. I accept it. Our squad is good. It's impossible to have
such a difficult season as we just had.
"Everybody is going in the same direction. The club's philosophy is to become
more self-sufficient and as a manager I don't need big money to spend.
"I don't have to show my commitment to the club, my commitment is very clear.
Over the last two years I have had many possibilities of leaving and never
wanted to leave. I commit to the club and give my best to the club."
