Makelele eyes US swansong
Claude Makelele, Chelsea’s veteran midfielder, would consider joining David
Beckham in America after admitting his future at Stamford Bridge appears
uncertain.

The France international still has one year of his contract remaining but has
revealed one of the options he is considering is to follow Beckham into Major
League Soccer in America, particularly as the emergence of Mikel John Obi and
Lassana Diarra will limit his chances of first team appearances next season.

Makelele, 34, who was inspirational in helping Chelsea to win Barclays
Premiership titles in 2005 and 2006, said: “I have not decided where I will
play next season. I could remain with Chelsea, as I am under contract for
next season. The United States is an option. It wouldn’t prevent me from
playing for France, ask the coach.”

It was his insistence on remaining part of the France national team which
upset his relationship with Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea coach, last season.
Makelele had made it clear to Raymond Domenech, the national coach, that he
wanted to retire from international football after last summer’s World Cup.

But Domenech continued to select Makelele and Mourinho made it clear to the
player that if he wanted to remain part of his first team plans, he must cut
down on his international football.

Now, however, Makelele now insists he would be delighted to play for his
country in the finals of Euro 2008 and his desire to do so will only increase
speculation about his future. He added: “If Raymond Domenech calls me up, of
course I would be pleased to play Euro 2008 next summer.”

Meanwhile, sporting director Txiki Beguiristain has played down Barcelona’s
interest in Frank Lampard, the Chelsea and England midfielder.

Lampard has been consistently linked with a move to the Nou Camp while
contract talks with Chelsea continue to drag on. But while Barcelona remain
firm admirers of Lampard’s ability, they will not be making a move for the
player unless they sell one of their current midfield players.
