Pat Nevin: Commencing Wembley Countdown

the pleasure of a cup final May day. In this week's column, he insists we all
look forward.

It has been a hugely disappointing week for Chelsea Football Club with the
realisation that the Premiership title is now lost, on top of the Champions
League dream dying for another year. It doesn't however have to follow that
the fans should be totally distraught.

The English Premiership title is arguably the hardest domestic league to win in
world football and the Champions League is the pinnacle of the world's domestic
knockout football. In both competitions we were extremely close to going all
the way in a season that has had more than its fair share of problems, not
least the loss of key players at important times.
英超聯賽可以算的上是全世界競爭最激烈的國內聯賽，而冠軍聯賽則是世界範圍內俱樂部

Last week even before the Liverpool game I said that we should be proud of the
immense efforts made by the players this season. That was underlined by the
standard and the bravery of the second half display, with ten men, against
Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Jose Mourinho will have learned a great deal
in those 45 minutes about the will of some of his players.
即使在上個星期對陣利物浦之前我就曾說過，我們應當為球員們在這個賽季裏做出的偉大

As ever the likes of John Terry, Petr Cech and Michael Essien showed precisely
the attitude you would hope for, but others such as Paulo Ferreira were also
hugely impressive with their efforts for the cause and their never say die
attitude.

The temptation is to now look forward to next season and consider which, and
how many, new players are to be brought into the club. In actual fact this work
has doubtless been underway in the background for quite some time already and
the speculation will grow slowly but surely over the next couple of months on
the names, but the real focus for the players and the fans should still be on
the FA Cup final.
狠多人都已開始考慮下個賽季，並紛紛猜測會有多少新球員加入到陣中了。嚴格地說，引

The league game against Manchester United at the Bridge will now have a very
strange feel to it. Both managers will be keen to win because of the
psychological boost it will give, but neither wants to give anything away in
terms of tactics and neither wants to take any chances with injuries to
important players.
聯賽中在斯坦福橋迎戰曼聯的比賽會因此變得有些奇怪了--雙方的主教練無疑都想獲得勝

I suspect many key players will be given as much rest as possible between now
and meeting at Wembley on the 19th May. It will be intriguing to see what
happens then if both sides are at their strongest and well rested for the first
time in many months for the blue riband event in English football.

It is often the case that in FA Cup finals, in what should be one of the most
memorable days in their careers, most of the players on view are jaded and well
short of their best at the tail end of a long hard season. I played in the FA
Cup final of 1989, in 100-degree heat and it went to extra-time.

By the end of those 120 minutes most of the players scarcely had the energy to
climb the steps to receive their medals.

That should not happen this time and it could mean that the game will become
the classic it ought to be. Let's hope it is and that Chelsea win it, to become
the only English club to pick up two pieces of silverware this season.

Before all that United will be applauded on to the Bridge as Champions
tomorrow, which is the correct and honourable thing to do, even if it will be
a tad painful to bear. It will however hopefully draw a line under some of the
ill feeling that has been whipped up over the past few months.

The thing is that this ill feeling almost always happens under the most
pressured circumstances in modern professional football. Remember the spats
between Arsenal and Manchester United before Chelsea muscled in on the scene.
Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson may never be the best of mates, but over
time I suspect a grudging respect has grown between the two. The same will be
the case between Jose and the Scotsman.
在現代職業足球圈中，這種敵意幾乎總是會在壓力最大的情況下出現。還記不記得在切爾

Watching the two on the bench tomorrow will be entertaining enough in the
meantime, but the walk out side by side onto Wembley is definitely something
to look forward to.

是他們並肩走出溫布利的球員通道的那一刻。
After such a tough last week for the club, looking forward is the right thing
to do. Short term and long term I strongly believe we have lots to look forward
to, and the battle for next season's honours will be at least as exciting as it
has been this time, on as well as off the field of play. Jose was right to say
it, chins up chaps we have lots to be positive about.
在經歷了如此困難的一周之後，翹首期待將是最正確的心態。不管是在眼前還是日後，我
堅信我們都有許多值得期待之事，而下個賽季獎盃的爭奪、甚至教練們在場下的針鋒相對
