PAT NEVIN: TALES FROM BENEATH THE TWIN TOWERS

Pat this week joins the increasing excitement over Saturday's Wembley
showpiece and the nostalgia for the stadium that once was there.

Now that the new Wembley is finally ready to host the first game that will
begin a new history, this week this website is asking for our memories of the
old stadium.

We have all got specific memories whether we have actually been there or not.
My first recollections, like many Scotsmen, were watching on TV as England
played Scotland in the home internationals.

I would love to say the first and most enduring match to leave an impression
was the one when Scotland won 2-1 in 1977. The pitch was invaded, the
goalposts destroyed and the turf dug up by what looked like tens of thousands
of Bay City Rollers fans, all in a boisterous but friendly way of course.
Sadly it is not the first memory for me.
如果說到溫布利球場給我留下深刻印象的第一次最偉大的比賽，我認為是1977年蘇格蘭2

In fact the first Wembley game to have a huge effect on me was the 5-1
trouncing England gave Scotland back in 1975. Gerry Francis destroyed
Scotland and as a boy I walked out of the house at half time close to tears,
to practice my dribbling skills in the garden. Maybe they would be needed
some day by my country.

They were some 11 years later. That was the first Scotland v England match I
had ever attended and I got a game!

An evening match, I came on as sub in that fantastic stadium in north London
to an amazing atmosphere. 2-1 down to England I got the ball in the box,
twisted and turned around centre-back Terry Butcher, he caught me as I went
by. If I had gone down it would have been a penalty and the chance of an
equaliser. But I never dived, not even when my country needed me.

I stayed on my feet, laid the ball back for Roy Aitken to smash it over the
bar, the final score was 2-1. When I walked into the dressing room, I was
wondering if the Scotland manager would be angry with me not going down for
the penalty. He was furious, but probably just about the defeat and I never
did find out what he thought of my honesty.

One thing is for sure he didn't include me in the World Cup squad a few
months later, but I have learned to forgive him for that. I cannot however
forgive him for his recent antics. How dare Sir Alex Ferguson and his team
steal our League Championship from us?

That was the beauty of Wembley; most people who love football have at least
one story that will stay with them all their lives about the old place, tired
and decrepit though it might have been near the end.

My most embarrassing moment in football happened there. For Chelsea fans of a
certain vintage it wasn't 'that' penalty miss against Manchester City,
actually I just found that funny. In actual fact it happened while playing at
Wembley for the Football League against the rest of the world. The opposition
included stars such as Maradona, Platini, Josimar and Lineker.
我足球生涯裏最尷尬的時刻也發生在那裏，對於那些曾經歷切爾西全盛時期的球迷來說，
並不是那個在對曼城隊時錯失的點球。事實上我覺得這個尷尬時刻很有趣，那是在溫布利

And the moment in question? Well pulling that white strip with three lions on
it, over my head of course. Pure torture for a Scotsman.

I played in an FA Cup Final there for Everton in 1989, but there is a special
place in my heart for the Full Members Cup Final in 1986 (pictured with Pat
second from the left, front row). Chelsea fans hadn't been to Wembley for
many years and although it wasn't a major trophy, they loved it.
1989年，我代表埃弗頓在這座球場參加了足總杯決賽，但是1986年的Full Members Cup決

It helped the occasion that we won 5-4 against Manchester City in beautiful
sunshine, but it was the fact that it was at Wembley that made it extra
special for everyone involved.

也使每一位到場的球迷倍感特殊。
This Saturday will be extra special again and hopefully we will triumph but
it is worth remembering how far we have come. From being delighted to be in
the Full Members Cup Final to being vaguely disappointed at only winning the
League Cup and possibly the FA Cup in the same season.

It's a far cry from just a few years ago and it underlines what a great time
it is now to be a Chelsea fan.

Last week's quiz question was about the 1989 FA Cup Final. I wanted to know
the only overseas star playing in the two teams that day. The answer I was
looking for was Bruce Grobelaar, the Liverpool goalkeeper who hailed from
Zimbabwe.
上周的問題是關於1989年足總杯決賽的，誰是交戰兩隊中唯一的海外球員？答案現在揭曉

A few of you and I would like to thank Mark Beresford, Robert Saunders and
Robert Amos among others, mentioned that there were two other players that
day not strictly from the British Isles, though they did play for Wales and
England respectively. Pat Van Den Hauwe was born in Belgium and John Barnes
was born in the West Indies. The winner however, picked at random as usual,
was Dave Fernie from California USA.
一部分球迷以及我要感謝的Mark Beresford、Robert Saunders、Robert Amos還有其他人
