DOWN YOUR WEMBLEY WAY - PART THREE

Today the coaching staff join with players in chatting about their
earliest and most vivid memories of Wembley Stadium. It is the assistant
manager who has the first tale.

The old stadium always had a special lure to fans of the Scotland national
football team, especially in the days of the old Home Internationals
tournament. Steve Clarke takes us back to 1981.

'My best early memory would be Scotland beating England 1-0,' he says.
'The year they tried to ban the Scotland fans was the first time I ever
went to Wembley.

'The ban was part of the reason I went and the other reason was my sister

years-old. 'It was a chance to go for the first time and the chance to
stick two fingers up at the English FA for trying to ban us. The fact we
won the game was a big bonus on top.'

One of Clarke's other cherished memories is of course the day he at last
got his reward for 10 loyal seasons as a Chelsea player. 'Obviously my
favourite moment at Wembley was wining the FA Cup in 1997. I said I
wouldn't go to the new stadium until I was involved in a match and
thankfully, I haven't had to wait very long.'

Jose Mourinho made two pilgrimages to the twin towers. The first was a
game that has already been highlighted by members of his current squad.

'I was in Wembley to see England against Scotland when Gazza scored that
goal in the Euros. The second time was with Barcelona and we played
Arsenal in the Champions League and won 4-2. Both times I was there were
absolutely magnificent.'

It has been well-documented that John Terry is awaiting his first chance
to play at Wembley having been an unused sub in the 2000 FA Cup Final. His
favourite memory coincides with Clarke's when as a Chelsea junior, he was
there in 1997 to see his current coach play.

'We had to lay the kit out in the dressing room beforehand and then
watched from the stands,' the skipper recalls. 'When Robbie scored so
quickly it was a great moment.'

JT's colleague in defence, Wayne Bridge, has a far less happy recollection

'We played Nottingham Forest in the Zenith Data Systems Final and lost
3-2. I remember travelling with my dad in one of his friend's car and we
lost him and got stranded. We got the train home in the end I think. I've
played the Final in Cardiff with Southampton but lost. It was depressing
so we better not do that this time.'

Paulo Ferreira is another of the generation to have been caught up in one
of Wembley's finest months. 'I watched some games in Euro '96 and it
looked beautiful. The new one is different but I think the old one, it
will always be that the players who played there, they will have a special
feeling. I've just seen the new one on TV, it looks nice.'

For Chelsea's Dutch pair, Khalid Boulahrouz and Arjen Robben, Wembley
during Euro '96 will always be painfully associated with Holland's heavy
4-1 defeat by England.

'I remember that 4-1 but as well I can remember an earlier England game

played,' says Boulahrouz. 'It was 2-0 to England but ended 2-2 and
Bergkamp scored. So I remember nice games there as well. For me it was
always nice to watch the games at Wembley. It was a special atmosphere. I
have never been there so I can't wait to get inside.'

'I have been to the old Wembley when I was in some youth team playing in
England,' says Robben. 'I think we played Wimbledon or something like
that. We had a little tour of Wembley and it was massive and nice of
course. As a young kid, it is always impressive to see it.

big and this is a special one of course. It is a big prize in England, we
haven't won it as well and I am looking forward to it. Playing Man United
adds extra. It is going to a big game.'
