Chelsea docs had big fears over Cech

Chelsea doctors were fearful that Petr Cech's head injury could be fatal
during Saturday's match at Reading.

At the height of the crisis, doctors feared that as consciousness slipped
away, the 25-year-old was close to death from what was later found to be a
depressed fracture of the skull, says the Mirror.

When Chelsea doctor Bryan English and his team reached Cech on the pitch,
the keeper seemed groggy but not badly hurt after being caught by Stephen
Hunt's knee.

Cech complained his vision was very blurred and a stretcher was summoned.

To the disbelief of Chelsea - who will today lodge a formal complaint -
referee Mike Riley ordered the keeper to crawl off the Madejski pitch to
be treated. That risked exacerbating any injury, with officials having
been instructed that players with head injuries should not be moved except
under medical supervision.

"Petr was asking questions about what had happened to him - he didn't seem
to know," explained one club source.

the results. They gave him another five minutes later and results were

That was when doctors called for an ambulance to get him to hospital but

The big fear was his brain was swelling. In these sort of situations, the
problem worsens as the brain reacts to the blow it received.

"Bryan and his team were very worried and desperate to get Petr stabilised
and to hospital as quickly as possible. They could see how serious this
was."

Cech facing months out after brain operation

Depressed skull fractures are common after impact with a blunt, heavy
object - in Petr Cech's case, Stephen Hunt's knee hitting his face, which
dented the skull and pushed pieces of bone towards the brain.

硬橋硬馬碰撞後導致痛苦的頭骨破裂很常見，但切赫這次是個重病例。亨特的膝蓋撞

Depending on where the fracture is, bone fragments could lacerate or
bruise the brain or damage blood vessels around it. There is also a risk
of increasing pressure on the brain, which can cause seizures or, in
extreme cases, death.

傷害程度取決於破裂的部位，骨頭碎片可能會割裂大腦或者造成腦部瘀血，或損害腦

The decision to operate meant the broken pieces of bone ended up more than
5mm deeper than the skull. Moving the bone away from the brain and
reassembling the skull is the priority. Surgeons would also have inspected
the brain's outer casing, which carries major blood vessels and helps
protect the brain. There is also a risk of added pressure on the brain as
a result of swelling around the fracture area - increased pressure can
crush soft tissue around the brain and can be fatal.

手術決定意味著破裂的骨頭碎片侵入腦部的深度已經超過頭骨了五公厘。首先必須清

According to Chelsea, the surgery was successful, but when Cech plays
again depends on the injury's severity. A simple fracture and he could
return within a month. If there was bleeding around the brain, this could
lead to further neurological problems, forcing Cech out for many months.
Whatever happens, he will need several months of brain scans before
getting a clean bill of health.
