MOURINHO: HIS MIDDLE MEN AND THEIR FUTURES

Jose Mourinho has been discussing the engine room of his side - the
midfield - ahead of Saturday's visit from Sheffield United.

The timing is appropriate. At Bramall Lane back in October, it was
midfielders who inflicted most damage on the Blades; Frank Lampard both
winning and scoring a free-kick just before half-time and then Michael

Mourinho will be without two of his other midfield operators for their

from foot surgery and has been joined on the sidelines by Wayne Bridge who
underwent an operation on his knee this week.

Andriy Shevchenko was on the bench against Man City on Wednesday. His
availability for Saturday has been confirmed in light of the knock he
received in training on Tuesday. It was Lampard who found the net at
Eastlands midweek, his penalty his 20th goal of the campaign.

The discussion moved to the subject of Lampard's Chelsea contract and the
possibility that under FIFA regulations, the remaining years on his
current deal could be bought out, with or without the assistance of
another club.

somebody does that with a big player at a big club, I want to see what
will happen after that.'

The talk widened to include John Terry and his future, as well as Lampard.

important than any advice. I don't make decisions for players. They are
adults; their decisions are their decisions and I will always respect
that.

Claude Makelele is another midfielder whose contract status has been the
subject of media talk. Mourinho takes a long-term view.

'It is one thing Makelele playing for Chelsea and one thing Makelele
playing for France and Chelsea. For example, after the game against

Michael Essien may be temporarily out of action but the 24-year-old did
sign a new five-year deal this week.

context in relation to his performance. The club was very happy and keen
to give him what he deserved and decide a new contract,' explained
Mourinho. 'This is the process. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes it takes a
