them all. So here is my view. Not surprisingly, it's very informed by Chelsea
experiences.

England drew in Israel and because the team didn't win were lamentable. But

When Jose Mourinho has needed a Plan B this season, he hasn't replaced a
right-back with a right-back as Steve McClaren did when Micah Richards came
on and was no improvement at all on Neville.

He has put Michael Essien there and attacked. Or, at home to Tottenham, he went

Here's a surprise! The last England manager to do something like that was Sven-
Goran Eriksson. In the pre-World Cup friendly against Argentina, when 2-1 down,
he took off Gary Neville, put Steven Gerrard right-back, brought on Joe Cole
and won 3-2. Gerrard crossed for one of the goals.

In top international football your full-backs have to be technicians who can
be crucial to attacks just as they have to be defensively top dogs. For years,
England have been men down when going forward.

Personally, I think Gary Neville is deficient when going forward, and that has

English journalists it is better to drop Frank Lampard and play Gerrard
through the middle.

Well, actually, I think Steven Gerrard is the best right-back England has. I
think he could be our Cafu. I remember him winning the Uefa Cup at right-back
for Liverpool in 2001, and the FA Cup the same season. Their creative
midfielder then was Gary McAllister.

from the right of midfield, Shaun Wright-Phillips - then you're building a
team with cutting edge and ability.

England lacks a top front man and there's nothing that can be done about that,

Therefore, here they are. Frank Lampard scored a brilliant goal at Barcelona
this season. In the Champions League he scored two brilliant quarter-final
goals at home to Bayern Munich and a brilliant semi-final goal at home to
Monaco. He was England's top scorer in the qualifying rounds for the World
Cup. He has scored 20 goals for Chelsea this season and one for England.

And now, as it's a columnist's job to assess and conclude from research and
facts, I'm going to do that.

Lampard must play. Whatever the statistics, Rooney must play. And Gerrard must
play. The manager must find a way of making it work.

Finally, a note to all journalists who say that Lampard and Gerrard can't play
