FOOTBALL ICON 2 - THE FINAL
Fri, 8th Dec 2006
In tonight's final episode, the last three boys go head-to head to compete
for the glittering prize - a professional contract at Chelsea. Competing
for that contract are:
Tom Bird, left-back (pictured left).
Stuart Gates, centre-forward (centre).
Carl Magnay, central defender (right).
After leaving the Football Icon Mansion, the boys rejoin the Chelsea
Academy to resume their training with the Chelsea youth team. During a
frenetic series of matches to decide the winner - three in all - the boys
get their first taste of playing abroad with a game in Holland.
Back home, there's a surprise meeting with John Terry, who talks to
themabout his own experiences as a young footballer. Asked on whether he'd
ever play for another club, JT says:
"No never. You don't really get it nowadays where players stay at one club
all their careers. So it is something I definitely want to do. Hopefully,
I am going to spend the rest of my career and life at Chelsea."
On the importance of the youth set up for Chelsea future success:
"Everyone looks at Chelsea now and thinks I'm coming through the ranks, I
won't get my chance.
"They can just go and buy this player and that player. It is not about
that you know, I have had longs chats with the manager and Roman, and they
have said they want players coming through, they don't want to keep going
out and buying because it's okay for short terms success but for long
terms success they need these players coming through.
"People like yourselves [Football Icon players] in a couple of years
coming through."
On what it means to play for Chelsea:
"Really proud actually especially having been there so long, I have been
with Chelsea now since I was 14. Every time I do put a shirt on a
Saturday, or a Sunday, you know I have a couple of seconds to myself to
realise how am proud I am to be wearing the Chelsea shirt. It means a lot
to me, and everybody knows that. I love the club it is great."
On who he admired when a youth team player:
"At Chelsea, I would say people like Wisey. Tony Adams I really looked up
to. People who played with a lot of passion. Their hearts on their
sleeves. That's what it's about.
"That's what we get a buzz from - throwing yourself into the tackle or
getting one in the face, that's what it's all about. That's our
excitement. A different breed, aren't we, centre-halves?"
On his time in the youth team:
"You know what, in the early stages of my career, there was no way that I
was the best player in the youth team or anything but one thing I made
sure of that everyday that I went in and give it 110 per cent. You know
that there is not one day, when I don't go in and give it my everything."
There's also another big shock for the boys, when the judges reveal that
they will be facing a surprise elimination with the numbers being cut from
three to two.
And during a visit to the first-team training ground, the finalists bump
into Jose Mourinho. Then, finally, there's the make-or-break game which
will determine just who wins that coveted Chelsea contract.
The programme concludes the series and the biggest ever search for young
football talent in the UK. Can you spot the winner - Carl, Tom or Stuart ?
