Chelsea's Spy In The Camp has been bringing inside news, banter and
comment for 20 years in the matchday programme, on Chelsea TV and now on
the web. Today he follows a managed injury and a managed pitch.

The performance by each player that the average fan sees on matchday is
very rarely the whole story of that player.

Take Ricardo Carvalho last night, substituted at half-time in the 1-0 win
over Newcastle. He suffered an ankle injury in the first-half against West
Ham over three weeks ago and it has been carefully managed ever since.

When the squad went off to play Werder Bremen the following midweek, he

He didn't train all week, not even the pre-matchday session on the

Trafford against Manchester United. Saha did beat him for United's goal,
but Riccy got Chelsea's equaliser.

The squad stayed in the north, but on Monday when they had the warm-down
he stayed inside for treatment. So his first training session for 10 days
was on the Tuesday, the day before the Bolton match.

He played, Chelsea kept a clean sheet and flew back that night. Thursday

Friday and had further treatment. The weekend was without a game. He
trained fully on the Saturday but could still feel the problem and had to
undergo treatment on the Sunday.

He trained again on Monday before the Levski Sofia match and played that
on the Tuesday.

Wednesday was off for the squad, but once again he went into Chelsea for
treatment. He had further treatment on the Thursday, missing training,
then trained fully on Friday and Saturday before playing against Arsenal
on Sunday.

The problem seemed to be over, and he trained on Monday and Tuesday before
playing against Newcastle last night. But, would you believe it, he
twisted his ankle again - not hugely, but it exacerbated the original
problem. Thus Jose Mourinho decided to substitute him at half-time.

Today he has not joined in with the warm-down again, but has been

He will be fit for Everton on Sunday. It'll be another game where he is
prepared carefully by a joint effort of medical and training staff. And if
he carries on in his recent form, he will be a second rock next to John
Terry in the centre of defence.

The Stamford Bridge pitch is being ripped up today and a new one will be
laid in time for the visit of Reading on Boxing Day.

It started to deteriorate against Levski Sofia, and the weather has been
shocking since. It rained through all but the first ten minutes of the
match with Arsenal on Sunday. The team trained on it on Tuesday evening
before the Newcastle match, and plans were already well advanced.

The team has trained there more this season than for several years, and
the continuing home record certainly seems to justify the outlay being
laid on it.
