Neil Barnett has been writing, editing and broadcasting for Chelsea for
over 20 years. Today he considers the shape of things to come.

My educated guess is that if there was a poll of supporters asking if
they'd rather Jose Mourinho play with a 4-4-2 diamond midfield formation
or 4-3-3, they would choose 4-3-3.

Again at Everton yesterday, it became necessary to change to 4-3-3 to get
back into the game. He did it at Barcelona with 20 minutes to go and at

But the truth is that change is often a good thing if the team is not
playing well, and the team often benefits from switching to whatever Plan

So, it is obvious that the most entertaining football is likely to be
played when the most risks are being taken. That is what happened at
Everton yesterday.

If he were to play with a three-man midfield, then either one of the
awesome foursome in the diamond would have to be left out, or Essien would
have to start at right-back where he increasingly seems to finish.

But he is such an attacking right-back, a kind of half-defender and

Yesterday, the manager's decisions were swayed by who was available. He

To come to matches away from home with these teams with direct football
and power at set-pieces is difficult to do without Petr Cech, and is

'I change because the two are not playing, and at the last moment I felt

In terms of control the first-half went well, but defensive lapses allowed
Everton to get in behind a couple of times, and the controversial incident
when Johnson broke through was one of them, and the penalty was another.

By half-time, therefore, Mourinho was chasing the game.

free-kick set up the equalizer.

the direct football, but when the team is in all-out attacking mode,

Jose's tactical version of his changes was: 'We change to 4-3-3 and after

In fact, he went to a sort of 4-2-3-1 following the winner. The defensive

the line of three who were now also pretty defensive were still Ballack,
Lampard and Bridge; and Shevchenko played alone up front.

Cech, Terry and Joe Cole are all sorely missed. Cudicini is missed when

As we wait for them to come back, we must cross fingers on the continued
