Terry eager to make mark
By Lewis Rutledge - Created on 7 Feb 2007
"I want to be remembered as a great England captain, not just as a bloke who
wore the armband a few times," he told The Sun.
"There is no greater honour in my life than captaining my country and I've got
one chance to make a success of it.
"I want to make the most of it and give it everything I can."
Terry is puzzled as to why England have underachieved in recent years, but
maintains that the players are good enough to be successful on the
international stage.
"I don't want to look back in 10 or 15 years and say 'Oh, I wish I'd done this
or that'. I want to do everything I can to gain success with England and have
no regrets," he explained.
"There's no reason why we shouldn't be doing a lot better when you consider
what we've achieved at club level.
"Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all done well in the
UEFA Champions League over the years.
"It's just down to performing more consistently in an England shirt.
"Everyone expects great things of England, including the players, but it
doesn't happen automatically.
"I do take it personally when things don't go right. Even more so now that I'm
captain."
