史密斯周中：白鹿巷之痛

Mentally bruised from his experience on Sunday, our Wednesday columnist
ruminates on the dangers of relying on others.

由於週日精神上極度受挫，我們週三的專欄作家現在要跟大家探討一下，想依賴別人取勝
的危險。


Disappointed with my performance at the weekend. Thought I was above that kind
of basic, unprofessional error by now. But clearly not.

我對週末自己的表現非常不滿。本以為我不會犯那些低級而缺乏專業水準的錯誤，但看來
我錯了。


I let the occasion get the better of me. I allowed myself to believe - for all
of Saturday evening, and for the better part of Sunday, up until about 5.05pm -
that Spurs would take a couple of points off Man United.

我被好形勢搞得暈頭了。我竟然讓自己相信——從整個週六晚上，直到週日比較美好的那
部分時光：下午5點零5分之前——我竟讓自己相信熱刺能在曼聯身上砍掉兩三分。


I know, I know. Schoolboy stuff. The kind of thing that should be drummed out
of you on the training ground in your first season. Only a few days before the
match, on this very website, the infinitely wise and knowledgeable Rick
Glanvill had spelt out the rank foolishness of ever relying on Spurs to
do your a favor.

我知道…有些天真。這種浪漫的想法自你踏上訓練場的第一個賽季就該徹底拋棄了。幾天

And I had nodded sagely when I read that - only to go and blow it on the day by
allowing hope, and even, I'm ashamed to say, a certain amount of anticipation,
to creep in.

毀，有些慚愧的說，竟滋生了某種程度的預言。


Looking back, and dispassionately analysing events, I realise that I allowed
the aftermath of our victory at Charlton to get to me.

The sight of the table in Sunday's papers, with us only three points off the
top, also almost certainly had a critical knock-on effect. And I began to
wonder, in the kind of delirium that followed, whether Spurs might really
give it something on the afternoon in question.

After all - my deluded mind started to reason - they were going into this match
on the back of a spanking by Arsenal's youth team in the Carling. Surely that
would be enough to spark a reaction lasting 90 minutes against a United side
that only recently revealed its fallibility away from home by losing to West
Ham. West Ham!

畢竟——我用稚弱的思維開始推理——這支隊伍剛剛在聯賽杯上讓阿森納的青年隊擊敗。這
樣的失敗一定會激起熱刺足以持續90分鐘的反抗，尤其是主場對陣曼聯，紅魔最近客場

But we all saw what happened, of course. After the show-pony Ronaldo short-
changed the ref for a penalty, Spurs collapsed like a souffle in a high
wind - almost like they took it personally, or something. I don't think
I've seen anything so abject on a football pitch since Sky Sports tried
to introduce cheer leaders.

Don't forget what was at stake for Tottenham that afternoon, how much was
resting on the occasion for them. By at least clinging on for a point at
home to United, Spurs could havehelped open a little wider the door that
stands between Chelsea and a record-breaking third consecutive title.

別忘了這個下午對托特納姆意味著什麼，別忘了這個時刻他們身上肩負著什麼。只要主場
能對曼聯拿分，熱刺就能把切爾西和破紀錄的三連冠之間的距離拉近些。


In other words, this was Spurs' big and probably only chance to play a
significant part in the story of the 2006-07 season. A bit part, true,
rather than a major role, but beggars can't be choosers.

換句話說，這可能是熱刺唯一的機會，能在06-07賽季的英超賽場上有舉足輕重的作用。更
確切的說，是起點小作用，而不是主要作用，但他們畢竟無法真正主導？


And they blew it. Utterly blew it. In the most feeble, unimaginative and even
embarrassing manner possible. But that's Tottenham, I suppose. It's the kind
of timidity and failure to understand - or even notice - the bigger picture
that we have seen all too frequently from that club over the last 30 or 40
years.

Nevertheless, this is the mild downside of our position in the Premiership, as
it stands. We can control our destiny, up to a point, by continuing to win, as
we did at Charlton, and as we surely must, at home to MiddleSuper Boyrough on
Saturday. But, if that third title is to arrive, we are, at some point, going
to have to rely on somebody else to step up to the plate on our behalf.

A club with some fibre. A club with the heart to resist the gale of hype
currently blowing behind United, rather than apologetically surrender to
it, in the manner of Tottenham. A club with a sense of footballing
history and a desire to shape it.

一家有著某種力量的俱樂部。一家有信心在面對曼聯時掀起些風浪的俱樂部；而不是像托特
納姆那樣輕易的不戰而敗。一家有著足球曆史傳統精神，並渴望繼續發揚這種精神的俱樂部.


In other words, a club like Charlton.

換句話說，一家如查爾頓這樣的俱樂部。


Well, why not? For Charlton, at Old Trafford this weekend, destiny awaits. They
should give it everything, then. Everything that they gave it last Saturday and
a bit more.

為什麼不可以呢？對查爾頓來說，這週末在老特拉福德，命運在等待著。他們必須全力以
赴。一如上週六的出色表演，甚至更出色些。

After all, what have they got to lose?

畢竟，無欲則剛，他們還有什麼可輸的？
