He took Saturday's 3-0 win for granted. It wasn't an inspired Chelsea performance against Middlesbrough on Saturday, but it carried some top of the range statistics. Middlesbrough had no shots on target. They had one corner only. Chelsea strangled them. Chelsea committed only six fouls all game, and only one in the entire second-half. That looked to be a result of total domination. It was the fewest fouls committed in a game by Chelsea this season. But the goals were not well fashioned affairs. I have never given assists simply for last touch - that doesn't recognise real football - and on Saturday in three goals I gave only one assist: Arjen Robben for the second goal, the own goal. For Chelsea's statistics, I invented 'Aids' during the Glenn Hoddle period, originally in order to recognise good play in the build-up to goals when we weren't used to such football. On Saturday I gave five aids because of good work but also because none of that was worth an assist. On Didier Drogba's first goal, Andriy Shevchenko for his work in stopping Xavier clearing, Lassana Diarra in winning the free-kick, and John Terry on forcing a hole next to the defensive wall all got aids. For the second goal Salomon Kalou for his deft return pass to Robben as Robben got up after falling received an aid. That might have been harsh: had Robben scored himself it would probably have received an assist. On Drogba's second goal, Robben got an aid for winning the free-kick. So the goals were the result of good individual play mixed with luck. But the good statistics were the result of highly disciplined team play mixed with quality. Drogba said after the game on his Chelsea TV interview, which you can see tonight, that Michael Essien is his Player of the Year. Essien is, deservedly, a lot of people's Player of the Year. He has brought quality to all the non-cutting edge of Chelsea's game in which he has operated this season. But Drogba now has 25 goals, and looks to be heading well beyond 30. There have been times this season when he has looked not only the best forward in the world, but the best player. The quality of his goals and his all-round play has been phenomenal. When we lost to Middlesbrough in the first away game of the season, in my car on the way home a group of Chelsea fans argued about what had gone wrong. Next morning, first thing, I watched the second-half again and was shocked at how different it was from what I thought I had seen at the Riverside. We had a front three of Shevchenko, Drogba and Kalou, and they all simply failed to hold the ball up whenever it was delivered. All three players went for goal with every touch. They nearly scored on a handful of occasions. But mostly they gave the ball away and we were under increasing pressure throughout the half. The Boro goals seemed to be coming nearer all the time. As a result, Jos? Mourinho left Drogba out next game. He couldn't leave all three strikers out. Robben was injured. Kalou was young. Shevchenko had scored. Drogba got the chop. Didier admitted recently he was very unhappy with that, and was determined to show he would react in the right way. He achieved that. He came off the bench at Blackburn, bullied Ooijer into submission and scored a goal of glorious power and technique. Since then he has held up play like a big Mark Hughes. Scoring 25 goals gets him on my list of top Chelsea scorers in a season. He's got a lot of games left now to climb it. Last week he overtook Chelsea's most prolific scorer, Jimmy Greaves, in international goals scored while at the club. Drogba, Essien, Carvalho, Lampard, and now they are fit again Terry and Cech? they have all maintained an unbelievably high quality this season. Come to think of it, so has Wayne Bridge. That is why we can play without inspiration and win 3-0.
