LOOK AT IT THIS WAY - THE GOOD NEWS FINAL
Neil Barnett has been writing, editing and broadcasting for Chelsea for over
20 years. He believes the 2007 Carling Cup Final deserved better reviews than
today's newspapers gave it.
Hours after the end of the game last night, on the streets of Cardiff, those
Chelsea supporters who had hung around - many like me eating out rather than
battling the traffic back - had only one question: 'How is JT?'
When they were re-assured that he was a little dazed but okay, and had flown
back with the team, in nearly every case the next comment was: 'Wasn't it
great!'
And it was. Chelsea won the Carling Cup Final against a talented Arsenal team
who, yes, had some young players, but we had Lassana Diarra, John Mikel Obi
and at the very end Salomon Kalou.
Jose Mourinho admitted that Arsenal posed problems to our midfield diamond by
playing between our lines. They did that by exercising a 4-2-3-1 formation, so
they basically had five buzzing around and in-between our four.
That also allowed them to push Baptiste on to Claude Makelele whenever we had
the ball. It cramped our style of play.
Jose dealt with these problems by taking Makelele off and shifting to 4-3-3,
bringing Arjen Robben on to cause them problems.
There is absolutely no doubt if you trace our games this season that neither
the 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield nor 4-3-3 is better than the other, but
that Plan B often seems to work better than Plan A when we aren't doing well
and change.
Steve Clarke has suggested that the reason for this might be that with players
of superior ability, we are simply capable of adapting to change quicker than
the opposition. Jose said that Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack were far more
effective in the second-half when we were tighter in the midfield three and
had more pace and width.
But Didier Drogba re-iterated that we have to start games, especially big
games, better, and we haven't started big games well against Arsenal here
and Liverpool in the past.
Kerry Dixon has often said that we look much more imposing when we go for
teams rather than sit back, and of course Robben gave us that edge.
So we sorted out the tactical problems and we won the game and the Cup. We
had some terrific performances from Cech, Carvalho, Drogba and Robben when he
came on, and some promising ones from Diarra and Mikel when he came on.
We also sorted out the extra handicap of covering for John Terry when he was
injured. Jos? talked at Friday's pre-match press conference about how Michael
Essien is essentially a midfielder playing at centre-half, and you can see
that in his thinking sometimes, but he has been a magnificent centre-half,
and almost at times in the first 45 minutes he seemed a centre-half adjusting
to midfield.
Frank Lampard and Andriy Shevchenko thumped second-half shots against the
woodwork to underline Chelsea's superiority in the end.
Then in stoppage time came 'the brawl'. It was unfortunate, but I was
surprised when I re-watched it today how handbaggish it was. I thought Mikel
shouldn't have got sent off. Tour? lost his cool, and he had to go, and I
didn't see the elbow on Wayne Bridge in the footage.
On BBC Radio 5 at 10pm last night - by then I was on a moderately clear M4 - a
whole hour was given over to the brawl and how disgraceful it was. Nigel
Winterburn was on the end of a phone defending footballers, and saying what
Frank Lampard had said at the end of the game, that is was wrong but it showed
the passion the sides had to win the competition.
Today the newspapers have made their headlines with that and with the drama of
the John Terry incident followed by the happy photographs of him holding the
trophy.
What they didn't say was that the brawl was more than countered by the
splendid sight of players from both teams crowding round injured John Terry
with real concern, of Arsenal (and England) physio Gary Lewin who happened to
be behind the goal making his way back to the Arsenal bench racing on the pitch
to clear a passage in John's throat as Chelsea's medical staff ran half the
length of the pitch, and of players at the end of the game shaking hands and
embracing with opposition.
This was not a bad tempered game. This was a top class game technically,
tactically and athletically that had added ingredients - dramas - which
included a 30 seconds loss of cool.
The guilty players will suffer suspension and probably fines, and the
tournament will receive higher kudos for the quality of the 90 (plus stoppage
time) minutes.
I hope neither club gets into trouble for 'the brawl' but that both are
complimented for taking the tournament seriously, providing an excellent Final
and for all but that one moment giving us a good tempered affair.
Our former player David Lee travelled to Cardiff by train to watch, and noted
how Chelsea and Arsenal shirts were mixed together throughout the carriages.
He said that couldn't have happened 10 years ago.
As Arsene Wenger returned to the Arsenal dressing room following his media
commitments, he ran into Ashley Cole, stopped and asked after John Terry. Ash
said he was back and okay. Wenger asked for his best wishes to be sent to him,
and Ash thanked him and said: 'Of course.'
So, stuff the negative headlines. Bring on the next challenge.
