Chelsea squandered a lead and left it late to gain victory against a young
Charlton side, but now have three wins in five games since going out of
the FA Youth Cup at Liverpool.
Football Icon 2 winner Carl Magnay headed the winner two minutes from time.
Manager Ruud Kaiser found the game perplexingly split into two halves as
deeply as the cliche itself is embedded in our minds. 'In the first-half
we were really good and dominated. Charlton played with some young players
and couldn't cope.
'Morten Nielsen hit the bar after 12 minutes. We scored soon after 20
minutes, Morten going through to the goalkeeper and having his effort
saved, but the defender following in got hit and it was an own goal.
'We got more chances. Miroslav Stoch hit a great pass behind the defence
for Morten and he beat the goalkeeper but the ball was cleared off the
line. That was just one minute later.
'Then just before half-time Liam Bridcutt found Shaun Cummings on the
right-hand side, he made a great run and crossed and Morten was a yard
wide. We could have killed the game.
'They had one chance on a break, and Rhys Taylor received a yellow card
for conceding a free-kick outside his area.'
Charlton's manager, our own former Under-16s coach and first team
midfielder Damian Matthew, changed to a 4-5-1 formation at half-time.
'Maybe what triggered the change for us was that the boys found it too
easy, they thought they would win by more' said Ruud. 'The level of our
boys dropped dramatically.
'Charlton blocked Liam Bridcutt now, stopped him passing, but that was no
excuse for us. We were losing first and second balls, not winning
one-on-ones.
'Charlton came three times in front of Rhys Taylor and shot wide three
times. We were lucky. They also hit the bar. You waited for 1-1, and when
a free-kick came into the box and we failed to clear with 13 minutes to
go, they equalised.
'I could not accept the draw! So I took left-back Jonas Elmer off, played
with three defenders, put on Adam Phillip from the Under-16s and played
3-3-4.
'With three minutes to go Adam hit a great ball into the box, Lee Sawyer
arriving hit his shot into the top corner and the goalkeeper made a great
save. But from the corner we scored. Miroslav Stoch took it and Carl
Magnay scored with a great header.'
Ruud has a simple challenge for the side now. 'We have nearly 10 games
left this season. If we play well, we should not get beaten in any of
them. We should go to the end of the season now without losing.'
