PAT NEVIN: SPIRIT AND THE SPECIAL ONES

The events of the past week have given former Chelsea star and our Tuesday
columnist Pat Nevin plenty to think about it. He makes sense of it all
here.

The thought of losing a popular, talented and even talismanic manager is
one of the most difficult things any football team has to deal with.

想到會失去一位很受歡迎、很有才能甚至是富有魔力的主教練，無論哪支足球隊都會
愁到焦頭爛額。


When there is a trust and a special bond built up between the players and
the boss, especially on the back of success, the sum of the whole becomes
greater than the sum of the individual parts. It is worth remembering that
this greater team spirit is an extraordinarily difficult thing to replace
quickly when it is lost.

如果球員和教練之間能有信任、能有一種特殊的緊密聯繫，尤其再加上勝利的支撐，
集體的力量就比單純的個體羅列強的多。大家一定要記住，這種難能可貴的團隊精神
一旦喪失，重建就不是一件簡單的事。


Some managers, fewer than you think, have that rare ability to get the
maximum out of players. It is an old cliche, but just a handful of those
in charge are capable of getting the rest of us mere mortals to walk
through brick walls for them.

確實有這樣有能力激發每個球員最大潛能的教練存在，但比你想像的要少。可能有些
老生常談，但的的確確，能夠讓我們這種普通人為他們披荊斬棘的總是寥寥無幾。


I only worked with a couple of these greats throughout my 20-year football
career, and they became mentors, friends, psychoanalysts and among the
people I have most admired in my life.

20年的職業生涯裡，我只有幸和兩個這樣的教練共事過，後來他們成了我的良師、益
友，成為我心靈的開導者，是我生命中最敬仰的人之一。


Day after day, the newspapers have been full of the turmoil and it has
been painful to watch the team I love above all others under so much
strain.

一天又一天，媒體們聒噪不安，眼看著自己心愛的球隊承受如此壓力真的很心痛。


I suppose we can only sit and watch and hope for a positive resolution to
this very worrying time. Anyway enough about Walter Smith leaving as
manager of the Scotland national team and joining Glasgow Rangers, what
has been going on at Chelsea?

我想，我們除了等待和關注，除了祈禱這個艱難時刻能有個完美結局之外別無可做。

On the park, normal service was resumed against Wigan Athletic after a
sticky festive period, showing that the week's stories regarding Jose had
little effect on the players.

The positive reaction from the team did not surprise me as football folk
are quite used to press speculation and are masters of putting that to the
back of their minds until something actually happens.

They will however be hoping calm will return as soon as possible, though
if you are at one of the top clubs in the world, you know that this level
of interest comes with the territory.

The important thing to ensure is that the group spirit isn't affected and
that no schisms occur within that group in the dressing room.

Jose Mourinho, Stevie Clarke and the rest of the staff know this only too
well and will be working hard to make sure that the training and the
atmosphere at Cobham stay upbeat.

莫里尼奧、克拉克以及所有其他的員工們都對這道理再清楚不過，他們會竭盡所能保
證柯本基地良好的訓練和氛圍。


That usually isn't too difficult when the team is winning and as such the
four goal thumping of Wigan was just what everyone concerned needed at
this time.

在球隊勝利時做到這些並不十分困難，而對維甘的四球狂勝正是此時每個人都渴望看
到的。


The statistics still show that Chelsea's home record is the envy of every
other club and if this is a crisis, and when exactly was the last domestic
defeat? - then the club has certainly witnessed far more serious
predicaments in the past.

數據依舊顯示切爾西的主場成績是任何其他俱樂部難以企及的，如果這樣的結果還算
是危機的話，而且想想我們上次的國內比賽落敗是什麼時候？ — 那麼，過去的切爾

Actually that last reverse was way back at the start of November against
Spurs and since then Chelsea have managed to stay in touch at the top as
well as progressing in all the cups, while suffering from an incredible
injury list.

實際上上次的輸球還要回溯到11月份客場對熱刺的比賽，而自那以後雖然傷兵滿營，
切爾西依然是聯賽冠軍最有力的爭奪者，依然在各大盃賽上勇往直前。


I say all this to allay some of the fears of our many readers all over the
world, because my email in box has been bombarded from everywhere from
Nigeria to New Zealand and China to Chingford by fretting fans.

我之所以說這些，是想減輕全世界讀者們的憂慮，因為我的郵箱快要被來自各地的郵
件擠爆了，從尼日利亞到紐西蘭，從中國到欽福德區，球迷們都被這件事困擾著。


It always seems worse from a distance but it is worth concentrating less
on what might happen in six months time and more on the matter in hand and
that is a vitally important game against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

從遠方猜測常常會有更加糟糕的錯覺，但現在更該做的不是議論六個月以後會發生什
麼，而是把目光聚在更加極待解決的事上：週六在安菲爾德對陣利物浦的比賽至關重
要。


If the Blues can get a result there, in one of the most difficult fixtures
of any season, then there is a run of very winnable home games to follow.
Hopefully things will be looking even rosier after that, especially as
Manchester United will be travelling to Arsenal and Spurs during that
period.
