Kenyon denies Chelsea unrest talk
Peter Kenyon has again dismissed talk of a rift between Chelsea owner Roman
Abramovich and boss Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho has been tipped for a summer exit but chief executive Kenyon told
BBC Five Live Sport: "The owner and the board fully support Jose as manager.
"Jose has also made statements this week that he loves Chelsea, he likes
living in London and his contract until 2010 he intends to see through.
"There is a healthy tension in the club - focused on moving Chelsea forward."
The Premiership champions, who last Thursday played down reports of unrest at
the club, dropped another three points with a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on
Saturday.
And newspaper reports have again suggested that Mourinho and Abramovich are
not
on speaking terms.
But Kenyon added: "It's quite amazing that because we have lost again that
this
thing gets reignited.
"Within Chelsea it's business as usual. On all the key issues the manager, the
owner, the chief executive and the board are involved and that hasn't changed
and it won't change.
"To be successful we have to have a team that is together.
"Like any business we don't all come to the table with the same view. We deal
with those things around the table and internally.
"I think we are lucky to be involved in what is the best league in the world
and with that comes lots of different responsibilities and lots of different
pressures.
"As far as we are concerned we respect the job Jose has done. We selected and
brought him on board and gave him a contract until 2010. We want him to
achieve
the long term goals of Chelsea."
Asked if Kenyon was 100% sure that Mourinho would be at Chelsea next season,
he said: "Why not? There is nothing happening to suggest he isn't."
Kenyon admitted their move for Bolton's Tal Ben Haim was virtually dead and
all
but ruled out a major signing in the January transfer market.
He added: "We had three centre-backs out yesterday but the January market is
notoriously difficult in terms of quality players available.
"We are continuing to see if there is anyone we can bring in and the window is
still open."
However, Kenyon was adamant that Chelsea will not be selling any players in
January and he is hopeful the club will soon tie key pair Frank Lampard and
John Terry to new deals that could keep them at Stamford Bridge for the rest
of
their careers.
"I would say we are ahead of the game on these and there is also
Michael Essien
who comes into that," he said.
"I think it is fair to say with John and Frank we are well down the line with
new contracts that will keep them at the club for substantially longer and I
think that would be a big boost for everyone.
"We are involved in the best set-up, involved in one of the best English clubs
why would they want to play football anywhere else?"
A win for Manchester United against Arsenal on Sunday would leave Chelsea nine
points behind their title rivals.
But Kenyon stated: "I think we are in as good a position as anyone else.
"We have a long way to go and I still believe we have one of the best squads to
do it and clearly the best manager to do it."
