In his weekly column, one Chelsea ball player of the 1980s talks about one
Chelsea ball player of the current decade, and how much he is being missed.

It is a truism that we never really know the value of something until we lose
it.

Chelsea fans might have had a decent idea that not having John Terry around
would create a decent sized void in our team, but maybe the lack of the
influence of Joe Cole wasn't quite so immediately apparent.

Spotting Joe on crutches at the training ground the other day was indeed a
sad sight, considering he is usually among the nimblest of footballers around

For all his balletic balance, his skill and intelligence over the past couple
of seasons, he still looked like just one more star in a rather crowded
galaxy.It has become apparent however that his particular style of invention
has been sorely missed over the last few months.

Jose Mourinho may in time have similar feelings about Joe Cole. An extremely
talented but inconsistent player has been turned into to an international star
that can be trusted to come up with the goods on a regular basis. Jose
certainly can take a good deal of the credit for that, along with Joe himself
of course.
現在的莫里尼奧應當對喬科爾有同樣的感受。天資聰穎但過去缺乏穩定狀態的他在穆

His goals have been missed but his creation of chances and space has been
missed even more. It may well have been that Shevchenko's recent scoring
spree would have started sooner had Joe been around to provide the ammunition.

One of Chelsea's main strengths in the past two seasons has been the ability
to change the style of attack, either by tactical manipulation or by timely
substitutions. Joe Cole regularly helped in both of those areas and no doubt
the manager realises as much as anyone the decrease in his options without
the England player.

Let us hope he is fortunate with his recovery and is back as soon as possible,
certainly the luck I was talking about last week appears to have carried on
for the Blues in some respects.

The FA Cup draw has been relatively kind again with a home tie against either
Norwich City or Blackpool to look forward to, along with the first - and
hopefully not the last - final of the season in the Carling Cup, time to get
the red carpet prepared once more.

That reminds me of something which happened down at the Stamford Bridge last
season. As most of you will know it was the club's centenary year and the
current owners spared no expense in the celebrations.

There was however a thought that some of the events were a little too
ostentatious, so one of the main get togethers was arranged in the original
old-fashioned pub - across the road from the stadium - where Chelsea Football
Club started all those years ago.

I went down expecting a fairly low-key affair, involving a few drinks with
some ex players, the current management and maybe a few of the fans.

On arriving, I was greeted by a mass of paparazzi, the red carpet outside,
flowing vintage champagne inside and the first person I saw on getting through
the doors was Claudia Schiffer. Now I don't know about you, but that is not
what it is like down my local pub on a wet Tuesday night.

It was a good night anyway and the old players were given a solid silver,
Chelsea inscribed, luggage label (in a Tiffany's bag) as a present when we
left. It was very thoughtful, though how long a silver luggage label would
last when put through with the baggage at any major international airport
remains open to question.
無論如何那個夜晚很不錯，所有老隊員在離開時都拿到一枚印有切爾西標誌的銀質行李
標籤（用蒂凡尼的包裝著）作為禮物。雖然在國際機場間來回穿梭的旅程裏，一枚銀質
行李標籤能夠用多久誰都不得而知，但這種禮物的意義卻的確深遠。
Anyway, I mentioned this because I was going to give that label away as a
prize
this week, but guess what, I can't find it. If I do it will go as a prize some
time soon.
其實我提到它是因為我想把它當作這星期的獎品，可是，知道麼，我找不著它了。要是
哪天找到，我一定會把它當獎品的。
In the mean time, last week's winner was Kevin Harman from Guildford who
correctly noted that in his last international game, assistant manager Stevie
Clarke was marking that other Chelsea legend Ruud Gullit, who was himself
playing his last game for Holland.
同時說一下，上周的優勝者是來自吉爾福德的Kevin Harman。他準確的回答出，在我們
的助理教練史蒂夫克拉克的最後一場國家隊比賽中，他的對手中有另一位切爾西英雄路
德古利特，同樣是代表荷蘭國家隊出場的最後一場比賽。
This week's teaser relates to Celtic FC who were mentioned above. Chelsea once
signed a Scottish international from that club and his career was cut short by
an eye injury. He was an exceptional player but can you name him?
這周的題目跟前面提到的凱爾特人有關。切爾西曾簽下一位來自那個俱樂部的蘇格蘭國
腳，然而他的職業生涯因為眼部有傷而不得不戛然而止。他可是位優秀的球員，你能說
出他的名字嗎？
