France coach explains Maka selection

The coach of the French national side, Raymond Domenech, has revealed that
Claude Makelele’s inclusion in the squad to play Euro 2008 qualifiers next
week may be news to the player.
It was thought the Chelsea midfielder would bring the curtain down on his
international career having played on the losing side in the World Cup Final
back in July.
However in the squad named today (Thursday), Makelele is included along with
William Gallas.
“I did not ask him [Makelele] his opinion,” Domenech has admitted. "For me
he is excellent and he must play with the French team.
“A player cannot be in a club like Chelsea and play at such a high level and
not be with the French team. I spoke a lot with Claude and told him that he
was not obliged to come and play with us, but also that it would be better if
he did feel obliged to.
“This is a risk I am taking but if it allows us to do as well as from the
2006 World Cup then that's a risk I am prepared to take. A player like
Makelele who plays so well is likely to be called up.”
The 33 year-old player previously announced he was quitting Les Bleus in
September 2004 but was persuaded to return a year later by Domenech to help
revive a flagging qualification campaign for Germany ‘06.
Makelele has 50 France caps, 26 won while a Chelsea player.
Final against Italy in the Stade de France on September 6th.
