Is it safe to say we have now laid the recent jinx against Charlton to rest?
Perhaps it's not worth tempting fate just at the moment but this certainly was
a significant win over a side who had not lost for two months but succumbed
quite emphatically today to goals from Hasselbaink, Gallas, Gudjohnsen and
Le Saux.
And there could have been more. Chances came regularly throughout, crafted by
an all-round team performance that was by-and-large as smooth as the pitch was
rough.
Any pre-match concerns that still remained due to the visitors’ wins here in
the last two seasons soon evaporated when in only the second minute, Le Saux
swung a cross over to the back post and as Hasselbaink went to head, the
referee spotted an illegal contact by Powell and pointed to the area of sand
where a penalty spot used to be.
Hasselbaink inevitably took the kick and just as inevitably scored - slamming
the ball past Kiely’s right. No messing!
The game and the display had started brightly and on five minutes Gudjohnsen
headed over from a Gallas cross. Playing at right-back, William was getting
forward well and on ten minutes, he got forward very, very well!
Petit and Lampard produced a master class in how to work the ball out of a
tight midfield spot and sent Gronkjaer away. He carried the ball forward at
pace but even he was out-stripped by Gallas’ overlapping sprint. The ball was
laid into the defender’s path and with a first time shot, he cracked it low
into the far corner of the Shed End net.
