The third goal came 12 minutes from the break. Gronkjaer who was proving highly
effective as well as pacy, especially against a struggling Chris Powell, was
given the chance to cross by Hasselbaink and with a clever flick off the toe,
he found Gudjohnsen at the far post who showed great technique to dispatch a
shot which flew in low via a slight deflection.
Eidur nearly grabbed his second seconds from the break when he volleyed just
over but by then, Charlton had pulled one back. An otherwise exemplary Petit
(who had moved into the centre of defence with 22 minutes gone following a
back injury to Terry) lost possession and Lisbie was away. Desailly tried to
challenge but as he did, the ref decided a foul had been committed and a
penalty was called for. He booked the Chelsea captain as well, making it five
yellows now this season and ruling him out of the Shrewsbury match.
Cudicini’s dive was in the right direction but Euell’s spot-kick still had
enough power to give his side a glimmer of hope
They made two changes for the second-half. Powell was put out of his misery and
he was joined by Kishishev as forwards Bartlett and Johansson came on. Euell
moved into midfield, Lisbie wide and Konchesky went to left-back.
It wasn’t long though before a Le Saux free-kick from some 30 yards out on the
right almost crept into the top corner but Kiely at full-stretch applied just
enough fingers. Ironically, he managed to save that danger with far less
contact than he applied to Le Saux’s next long range effort a few minutes
later, this time with disastrous consequences.
Collecting Jimmy’s lay-off, Graeme hit his shot with plenty of pace but that
was still no excuse for the Charlton keeper’s punch-cum-flap that allowed the
ball to spin off into the net.
