With four Chelsea goals now on the scoreboard, it was a happy and laughing
Stamford Bridge - all apart from killjoy referee Mike Dean who booked
Gudjohnsen for kicking the ball high into the stand in celebration.
Hasselbaink tried to test the red-faced keeper again minutes later but aimed
just too high and then he hit the post on the hour mark after bursting through
onto Gudjohnsen’s returned pass.
Fortune then came on for Lisbie and with a now desperate Charlton pressing
forward, a storming break from our own half by Gallas, supported by Gronkjaer,
was dashed by an offside flag marginally before Gallas’ sliced finish missed
the target.
Kiely redeemed himself somewhat with an excellent one-handed save from
Gudjohnsen’s point-blank header before in the last 15 minutes, the Chelsea
changes came.
Morris had been the one to come on much earlier for Terry and now Le Saux was
replaced by Zola who went behind the forwards, and a more like-for-like swap
followed as Gronkjaer came off to a standing ovation, replaced by Zenden.
In the closing minutes, an allowed Fish push on Lampard looked a more clear-cut
penalty than any of the two that were awarded but enough damage had long since
been done.
So a good day at the office - the Terry injury and bookings to Le Saux,
Desailly, Petit, and Gudjohnsen apart – even if the office carpet did leave a l
ittle to be desired!
In truth, the sand that was passed off as a pitch today proved more divot-free
and played better than the mud of the previous two games. Looking at today’s
scoreline and performance, should the replacement due to start tomorrow even
be allowed to go ahead?!!
