Frank Lampard is going from strength to strength for both club and country. The FA.com's Dan Freedman asked him the secret of his current success... Were you satisfied with the second half to your season for Chelsea and England? Yes, very much. For Chelsea we achieved Champions League qualification, which was our aim right from the beginning of the season, and, for England, I played in our last three games and I felt as though it was the first time that I'd really imprinted myself on the team. I'd been in and around the squad for a long time so to be picked to start against Slovakia - which was my first qualifying game - was a great end to the season. How has your game changed since you've been at Chelsea? I think I have improved all-round as a player. When I was at West Ham I might have scored more goals sometimes and attacked more but now my game is far more rounded and the defensive aspect of my play has improved. Do you put that down to Claudio Ranieri or is it something that has come from you? Probably a bit of both. The manager has helped me by making me aware of certain things that you need to do as a midfield player. It has also come from myself too though. There has been a natural progression. I was still young when I moved to Chelsea - 22. I had a lot to learn then and still do now but I have definitely taken a lot on board over the last two years. With the summer signings of Wayne Bridge, Joe Cole and Glen Johnson, to add to yourself and John Terry, Chelsea's beginning to look like a mini-England... It is. The manager has had some money to spend and it's nice that he's spent quite a bit of it on English players. I think it bodes well for Chelsea and hopefully England too. Champions League football must be a great prospect for you? It's the reason I came to Chelsea - to get a go at Champions League football and play at the top level. It's fantastic. We are in the middle of qualification now and if we can get through that, we can look forward to playing some of the really big teams in Europe and hopefully matching them. Slovakia was the first qualification match that you've played in - what are your memories of the night? I remember the first half was a bit disappointing. We didn't play great as a team and went in 1-0 down at half-time and it could even have been two or three . The second half we picked up our whole game. Personally, I got a lot more involved too. I saw a lot more of the ball, made a few things happen, nearly scored and then had a goal disallowed for offside which, looking back, probably should have stood. It was the first time that I'd played 90 minutes for England and to do it in a qualifier was special. Did you take more individual responsibility that night? Yes, I think so. You have to do that otherwise the game will pass you by. Luckily we've got quite a few players who do take responsibility when they play for England and I think I was probably one of them that night. We knew we had to turn the game around in the second half and we took it on our shoulders to make the difference and that's what made us win the game in the end. You've played in a few different positions for England. Is there one that you're looking to make your own? I don't mind playing in different positions for England. It's such an honour just to play. Central midfield is the position that I'd love to hold down but obviously there's a lot of competition in that area. If that means that I end up playing on the left, I am comfortable with that. I did it against Slovakia and I'd be happy to continue doing it. How do the big England games affect you? I was nervous for the Slovakia match. England games always give you that little edge when you come up to the ground in the coach and all the fans are already there. The atmosphere is different to a club match. I knew that there was a lot at stake in that game and there'd be a lot of people looking at me as it was my first start in a competitive game. Thankfully it ended up being a good night both for the team and me personally. -- Deny your conditioning.Cry.Love your friends. Kiss strangers. Drink more. Do what you want. Have a baby.
