Eidur promises a hat-trick… one day
Thursday, Oct 30, 2003
The predicted result but an unpredictable substitution – even by the
Tinkerman’s standards! Post-match Claudio Ranieri substituted himself, and
instead two-goal Eidur Gudjohnsen conducted the post-match conference.
Gudjohnsen’s second goal of the night, a penalty, was also his 50th goal for
Chelsea but he admitted to being disappointed for not going on to complete his
hat-trick. He then went on to disclose an amazing revelation.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve scored two goals but I’ve never scored a
hat-trick in my professional career. So it definitely crossed my mind during
the game,” the Iceland forward admitted.
“I remember a game for Iceland when I scored two. I got a penalty for myself
in the 90th minute and I think they’re still looking for the ball somewhere!
“I will have to save it for a better day. I will do it one day. I won’t stop
until I do,” he promised.
“It's always important for strikers to score goals but the most important
thing is that we won. We would have wanted to keep a clean sheet. That’s
always very important because that gives the side a lot of confidence,” he
continued.
Gudjohnsen conceded that the performance in the victory over Notts County was
certainly far from a classic.
“We didn't play a great game and whatever the result tonight we were never
going to come out winners. Everyone expects us to win as we’re at home against
a Second Division side. People now expect fireworks every time they come to
Chelsea.
“I quite enjoyed the game because they didn't come here to sit and defend –
they came out and played and were very dangerous on set pieces,” he added.
Notts County are under administration and must raise £3million before December
8th. The striker was sympathetic to their financial plight.
“We were aware before the game of what was happening at their club. We were
told our shirts would go to an auction to help their financial situation,” he
said.
“It's a shame because they are the oldest club in the world and hopefully a
game like tonight can help them a little bit.”
Notts County manager Billy Dearden was delighted with both his team’s
performance and the financial boost for his cash-strapped side.
“The 36,000 crowd was tremendous for a Wednesday night and the gate receipts
will help tremendously.
“I am proud of the lads. It was a good Cup tie with action at both ends, goals
at both ends. The only disappointing thing from my point of view was that I
thought we deserved the result.
“Everybody thought we were coming here tonight just to make the numbers up,
with the position we are in the League and Chelsea in the top three. But we’
ve come here and we’ve proved we can play football. We played well with the
ball but we didn’t defend well enough.
“We expect Chelsea to have chances against us and I thought they played quite
well. It was a great team they put out. They’d made a few changes. When I
looked at the dug-out and saw the substitutes, I thought he’s weakened that
bench a little bit!” he joked.
